The 12.1" small and 2 kilogram light Acer Aspire 2920 is an attractive choice for home users, who are looking for a subnotebook with fully-fledged equipment and performance. Additionally, the 2920 offers plenty of space to store data and an excellent WXGA display.

Ultra portable and light subnotebooks that fit in handbags are currently very popular among notebook buyers. But until now, fully fledged subnotebooks tended to be prohibitively expensive. This situation changed when Asus published it's cheap Eee mininotebook. Other producers quickly noticed the potential, which explains the newest product announcements of HP's "HP2133" , MSI's "Wind Notebook", as well as Zepto's "Titan" and "Notus".
Nowadays users that need more performance, data storage or a bigger display than mininotebooks or ultra mobile notebooks (UMPC) can offer, can also choose among a variety of well equipped and still inexpensive 12.1 inch subnotebooks. Although they are not quite as light as the expensive high end subnotebooks and UMPCs, 12.1" subnotebooks like the Acer Aspire 2920 offer good overall performance at an acceptable price. We ran various tests to find out how much value you can expect for your money.
Like with it's big brothers Aspire 7520G and 7720G, the Gemstone design with light grey colours on the inside, as well as asymmetrically designed hot keys in blue neon colour look are responsible for the look of the Aspire 2920. Various illuminated status lights and the blue illuminated, circle shaped on-off switch add additional pep and improve the look inside the notebook.
The Acer Aspire 2920 looks almost cute with it's compact size of 31.0 x 22.7 x 4.4 centimeters in combination with the round case edges. Although it is a bit too big and with 2.1 kilogram slightly overweight compared with ultra light subnotebooks, the Aspire 2920 makes up for it with a significantly lower price than high end ultra portable notebooks.
Acer's little 2920 follows current fashion trends and presents itself with glossy display lid. But instead of common glossy paint it uses an interesting relief like 3D design. The lid is kept shut by self closing hinges, a switch is not necessary for the 2920. Lid workmanship is by and large solid, only the LCD frame is a bit thin and it's lower side has a gap of about a millimeter towards the display.
The case of the subnotebook impresses with a flexural rigid frame, which provides the notebook with a stable base and prevents most of the creaking noises that are typical for notebooks made with plastic. Far less impressive is the workmanship of the Aspire 2920's plastic parts. Imprecise workmanship caused small gaps around the hinge covers and the panel in front of it, which overshadows the otherwise positive impression.
All important interfaces are built into the Aspire 2920. Three fast USB 2.0 ports for external devices, S-video-out, as well as audio ports for earphones and microphone are available. A common VGA connection for external monitors is included as well. The Aspire 2920 doesen't have DVI or HDMI, but these digital video connections are not even common among more expensive 12.1" ultra portable notebooks.
Modern expansion cards can be inserted into Aspire 2920's ExpressCard/54 slot. Furthermore, the 5-in-1 card reader can also read popular flash memory with the format MultiMediaCard (MMC), memory stick standard and pro (MS, MS Pro), Secure Digital (SD) and xD-picture card (xD). A web cam that is integrated into the display frame above the screen and a microphone allow video chats with friends.
Responsible for data transfer over cable network is a modem and a fast Gigabit-LAN connection. Wireless connections are established over Intel's Pro/Wireless 3945ABG (IEEE 802.11a/b/g). But "turbo-WLAN draft-n standard with up to 300MBit/s is not possible with the 3945ABG. UMTS/HSDPA support is missing as well. The Aspire 2920 makes up for it with the fast Bluetooth2.0+ that lets wireless devices like headsets connect to the notebook.
The Acer Aspire 2920's accessories are rather limited. Neither recovery disc for Vista Home Premium nor driver CD/DVD are included in the package. Users have thus to create their own recovery discs with Acers eRecovery management via hard disc . As a result, it takes about one hour to fully restore the system including all drivers and help applications.
Six hot keys allow convenient control over the Acer Aspire 2920. Next to keys for the Acer Arcade entertainment software, as well as Bluetooth and Wireless LAN, are keys to quickly start the favorite web browser or e-mail program. A small wheel on the front side regulates volume of the integrated speakers.
Acer managed to put 85 keys on the keyboard of the Aspire 2920. Frequent spelling mistakes during fast typing are common at the beginning, despite standard layout. This is mainly caused by the small shift keys, which are only 1.2 x 1.4 centimeter big. Positive is the good feedback and clear pressure point, which cannot be said about the flexing around the number "9" on the keyboard. Even moderate key pressure bends the keyboard by about about a millimeter and lets it spring back if the key is released.
A 8.0 x 3.8 centimeter touch pad for mouse less navigation is integrated into the Aspire 2920. This is pretty much space to navigate for a subnotebook. The touch pad worked precise in the test and scrolling via optical marker worked without problems. Pressing the key combination Fn + F7 deactivates respectively activates the touch pad if necessary. Both touch pad buttons are very responsive and don't require strong pressure, but the clicking sound was rather loud in the test.
The Acer Aspire 2920 contains a 12.1 inch wide screen LCD (AUO B121EW03) with glossy surface (CrystalBrite). Despite it's small size, it has a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixel (WXGA) and puts with an impressive average brightness of 195.2cd/m2 most of it's bigger colleagues to shame. If the display wouldn't reflect so much, it could be used to work outdoors in shadowy places.
Illumination of our test sample was "very good". The Aspire 2920 display achieved a value of 85.7 percent. Brightness deviation between the brightest (215.4cd/m2) and darkest point on the screen (184.7cd/m2) is thus only 14.3 percent. Minimum brightness (black value) was 0.8cd/m2, resulting in a contrast of almost 270:1 - "good".

In the direct sight-comparison with our 20 inch benchmark TFT Viewsonic VP2030b, the Acer Aspire 2920 offers a good impression with brilliant colours and good colour display. The benchmark pictures look sharp and detailed. Portrait photos on the other hand show - following the current trend of notebook displays - a rather "cold" colour calibration (slight blue tint). Viewing angle stability is in vertical and horizontal direction "satisfactory".
Office applications verify that Acer's small subnotebook is indeed a fully fledged notebook. It flexes it's muscles with a Intel Core 2 Duo T5550. The T5550 has two processor cores with 1.83GHz and 2MByte level 2 cache each. The T5550 lacks only Intel's virtualisation technology (Intel VT) compared with the T5600. System memory is with 2GByte DDR2-667RAM more than sufficient for Vista HomePremium . Although the integrated X3100 graphics chip is rather useless for games, it is enough for multimedia shows and office applications.

The Acer Aspire 2920 achieves 3891 points application performance in the PCMark05, which is a "good" result. Although the T5550 offers a lower overall performance compared with the newer Penryn processors, it can still keep up with quite a few office notebooks and T7200 processors. The Aspire 2920 also managed a good CB processor value of 3891 when rendering multiple CPUs in Maxons Cinebench R10 benchmark.
The Acer Aspire 2920 uses Intel's energy saving integrated GMA X3100 graphics chip. This graphics chip offers enough power for Vista's Aero-Glass design and for simple multimedia applications, but not for newer 3D games. A low benchmark score of only 576 points in Futuremarks 3DMark06 (driver version 7.14.10.1329) and 635 points in the shading-test (Cinebench R10) show the clear limits of the X3100 in 3D games and applications.
A 160GByte Hitachi SATA hard disc HTS542516K9SA00 is responsible for data storage in the Aspire 2920. The Travelstar 5K250 is equipped with the usual 8MByte cache and works with 5400r/min. It has a shock resistance of 400G and offers thus good protection against shocks. The average transfer rate with HDTune on the other hand, is with 39.2MB/s only "acceptable". Sony's NEC Optiarc optical drive AD-7560A handles all standard DVD formats including DVD RAM, but it is rather noisy when active.

Subnotebooks set a very high priority to low energy consumption, 3D and game performance suffer accordingly. The integrated X3100 graphics chip offers thus only for simple older, or not very demanding games in low screen resolutions enough power. Current games with complex 3D graphics, high resolution and detail levels turn thus quickly into stuttering slide shows.

Noise level
Despite good hardware the Aspire 2920 stays with 35.1dB(A) (environment temperature: 21 degrees Celsius) quiet under low and moderate load. Fan noise keeps even and thus acceptable. More intensive work, like converting pictures or videos, make the fan noise clearly audible and add a slight high frequency noise at 36.9dB(A). The noise level goes up to maximum 39dB(A) if the subnotebook is kept under full load for longer durations. Far more annoying is the Optiarc AD-7560A, which is with 45.5dB(A) remarkable loud.

Temperature
Powerful subnotebooks get usually much hotter than more spacious desktop computers, and the Acer Aspire 2920 is no exception to this rule. We measured an average temperature of 36.7 degrees on the upper surface of the notebook, the maximum is 40.0 degrees Celsius. Even warmer is the bottom side of the Aspire 2920 with 37.9 degrees on average. Especially in summer, temperatures could get unpleasantly warm at the bottom of the notebook.

Loudspeakers
Acer put a lot of effort into the sound replay of the subnotebook. Various Dolby certificated sound improvements and two integrated "3D-stereo speakers" promise a lot to the user. However, a short test quickly destroys any hopes about the usefulness of these improvements. Although the Aspire 2920's sound is not so bad considering the size of it's speakers, proper surround sound is simply not possible due to size and construction.
Far more impressive is the sound from analog earphones. We tested the Aspire 2920 with our earphone benchmark Bose In-Ear headphones, and experienced a very powerful and natural audio replay. Listening to music on the notebook is thus real fun.
Power consumption of the Aspire 2920 is rather low and goes from 11.6 watt up to maximal 22.4 watt in idle mode. We also measured moderate 36.9 watt under medium load (Cinebench R10, one processor core). If processor and graphics chip are under full load, power consumption increases to 59.7 watt.
Included in our Aspire 2920 test sample was a 6-cell battery with 44.4Wh (4000mAh). It supplied enough power to keep the subnotebook in the BatteryEater Reader's test running for 4 hours and 5 minutes, which is "good". Not so good is the result with the more demanding Battery EaterClassic test, which depletes the battery in about an hour. This is a disappointing result for the Aspire 2920 and clearly below average for a subnotebook. An optional battery with 53.3Wh (4800mAh) is available for 95 Euro, which has longer battery life

Acer presents with the Aspire 2920-5A2G16Mi an inexpensive subnotebook with good application performance, satisfactory input devices, and a bright 12.1" display with well distributed illumination. The compact size and low weight of only 2 kilogram turn the Aspire 2920 in a low priced and portable travel mate. The Acer Aspire 2920 was a solid mobile all-rounder in our test and achieved thus the overall rating "good".
Case, input devices and interface equipment of the Acer Aspire 2920 managed a "good" rating as well. Small problems regarding workmanship and the bending of the keyboard offer room for improvements. The excellent 12.1"WXGA display on the other hand, earns it's "good" to "very good" (87 percent) rating without reservations. The noise level of the subnotebook is also "very good".
The 1.83GHz fast Core 2 Duo processor offers a fast base for this notebook class. But the Acer Aspire 2920 is due to the low battery life of only about one hour not very suitable for mobile high performance tasks. As long as the tasks are simple however, the 2920 offers with about 4 hours enough battery life.
For those who need low weight, compact size and a bright display for work on the go, should consider the inexpensive ultra portable notebook Acer Aspire 2920. For currently about 800 Euro, the Acer Aspire 2920-5A2G16Mi is a well equipped and portable subnotebook.

Nach dem Aspire 6920G, der neuen kompakten Multimediaklasse von Acer, hat es nun auch der etwas größere Kollege im 18 Zoll 16:9 Displayformat zu uns geschafft. Optisch gleicht das Notebook dem kleineren 6920G beinahe aufs Haar, kleine Unterschiede lassen sich jedoch bei der Ausstattung des Laptops ausmachen. Dazu zählt beispielsweise auch eine Geforce 9650M GS Grafikkarte, dem Nachfolger des 8700M GT Grafikchips.
Das neue Design des 8720G war uns ja bereits mit dem Aspire 6920G näher gebracht worden. Alles in allem kann das neue Gehäuse nicht nur durch seine gelungene Gestaltung sondern auch mit einer guten Gehäusestabilität punkten. Besonderes Interesse galt beim 8920G dem neuen 18 Zoll Display im 16:9 Format. Mit einer Auflösung von 1920x1080 Pixel kann das Panel HD Inhalte in voller Qualität (1080p) wiedergeben, und verzichtet dabei auf die bekannten schwarzen Ränder an der Ober- und Unterseite des Bildes.
Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt beim Test des Acer Aspire 8920G Notebooks galt der Hardware, insbesondere der Geforce 9650M GS Grafikkarte von nVIDIA, die die Nachfolge des Geforce 8700M GT Grafikchips antritt. Wo liegen die Stärken der neuen Grafikgeneration, und ist mit einer Performancesteigerung im praktischen Gamingeinsatz zu rechnen?
Das neue Gemstone Design der Aspire Serie sorgt für einen tadellosen optischen Auftritt bei der Consumer Reihe von Acer. Geradlinige, geometrische Formen werden gekonnt von Kurven und runden Elementen ergänzt, was den Geräten eine starke Widererkennbarkeit beschert und sie deutlich von Konkurrenzprodukten abgrenzt.
Ausschlaggebend für das kompakte und mobile Auftreten des als 18 Zoll Notebooks, welches aufgrund seiner Displayabmessungen wohl eher in eine eher wenig mobile Sparte geschoben werden würde, ist das neue 16:9 Breitbilddisplay, welches sich auch direkt auf die Gehäuseabmessungen auswirkt und das Notebook sozusagen auf Kosten einer geringeren Gehäusetiefe in die Länge zieht. Dem überaus agilen Eindruck des Gerätes steht jedoch ein doch sehr stolzes Gesamtgewicht von 4160 Gramm gegenüber, die sich insbesondere beim häufigen Transport des Notebooks unangenehm bemerkbar machen.
Das Notebook bekam außerdem eine Reihe von optisch wirksamen Beleuchtungsfeatures verpasst, zu denen auch die CineDash Media Console zählt. Hier handelt es sich um ein berührungssensitives Tastenfeld links neben der Tastatur mit der diverse Multimedia Funktionen gesteuert werden können. In kräftigem Blau erstrahlt auch der On/Off Button links oberhalb der Tastatur, der sowohl mit seiner Gestaltung als auch durch seine auffällige Beleuchtung in Szene gesetzt wird. Vom Vorreiter in Sachen Design hat man sich offenbar auch das beleuchtete Herstellerlogo am Displaydeckel abgeguckt, welches mit eindrucksvollem 3D Effekt speziell in gemäßigt beleuchteten Innenräumen gut zu Geltung kommt.
Neben all diesen optischen Vorzügen bietet das Chassis aber auch in Hinsicht Stabilität eine solide Basis für die tägliche Verwendung. Die Baseunit gibt sich überaus resistent gegenüber einwirkenden Druckkräften und verkneift sich auch beim Hantieren mit dem Notebook jegliches Knarrgeräusch. Nicht ganz so souverän aber noch immer mehr als ausreichend schneidet in dieser Disziplin der Displaydeckel ab. Unter Druck ist zwar eine deutliche Verformung des Displaydeckels zu beobachten, Veränderungen des dargestellten Bildes bleiben aber überwiegend aus.
Auch bei der Verarbeitung macht das Aspire 8920G einen guten Eindruck. Abgesehen von etwas zu stark ausgeprägten Nähten der Kunststoffteile bei den Scharnieren konnten keine Schwachstellen beobachtet werden.
Beim Öffnen und Schließen des Displaydeckels kann ein leises Knarzen vernommen werden. Dies war jedoch nicht auf die Scharniere sondern auf den Displayrahmen selbst zurückzuführen. Die Scharniere lassen ein leichtes Wippen des Displays zu, was bei einem überwiegend stationären Einsatz des Notebooks jedoch zu keinen Einschränkungen führen sollte. Außerdem verzichtet das Aspire 8920G auf einen Sicherungsmechanismus, wie etwa einen Haken im zusammengeklappten Zustand.
Der Öffnungsmechanismus des Displays schiebt den Bildschirm über die hintere Gehäusekante nach unten, was eine Positionierung von Anschlüssen an der Rückseite ausschließt. Auch an der Vorderkante wurde auf Anschlussoptionen verzichtet. Lediglich der 6in1 Cardreader (SD, MMC, MMCplus, MS, MS PRO, xD) findet an der schmal zulaufenden Kante Platz.
An der rechten Seitenkante findet man im vorderen Bereich einen ExpressCard Slot für diverse Erweiterungen, gefolgt vom optischen Laufwerk, im Falle der von uns getesteten Modellvariante 934G64Bn einem BluRay Laufwerk von Optiarc (BD ROM BC-5500A). Damit kann man das Aspire 8920G auch mit hochauflösenden HD Daten via BluRay Disk füttern, wenn auch die angebotenen Datenträger noch deutlich teurer sind als herkömmliche DVDs. Im hinteren Bereich findet man auch noch zwei USB Ports und versteckt hinter einer runden Kunststoffabdeckung ein Kensington Schloss.
Die linke Gehäuseseite nimmt im Bereich des Scharniers den Netzanschluss auf. Davor kommen der Modem- und LAN Anschluss zu liegen. In weiterer Folge findet man noch einen analogen VGA Ausgang sowie einen modernen volldigitalen HDMI Port. Es folgen zwei weitere USB 2.0 Anschlüsse und die Audio Ports (Kopfhörer, Mikrofon, Line-In). Acer verweist außerdem auf eine S/PDIF Schnittstelle (optisch) mit 5.1 Surround Output.
Die Positionierung der einzelnen Ports ist im Test durchaus positiv ausgefallen, wenn auch man eine Bevorzugung von Rechtshändern anmerken muss. So können beispielsweise an den USB Ports der rechten Seite im hinteren Bereich bequem eher dauerhaft angeschlossene Geräte wie etwa Maus und Drucker mit dem Notebook verbunden werden, während die beiden Ports an der linkes Seite sich sehr gut für einen kurzen Einsatz mit USB-Sticks, Wechselfestplatten und Digicams eignen. Damit kann unnötiger Kabelsalat rund um das Book einigermaßen verhindert werden. Nicht ganz optimal in dieser Hinsicht kommen allerdings die Audioports an der linken Seite im vorderen Bereich zu liegen.
Verzichten muss man beim Aspire 8920G auf einen Firewire Port. Dieser fehlt bei allen angebotenen 8920G Modellen.
Zwecks Kommunikation bietet das Aspire 8920G ein schnelle 10/100/1000 Gigabit LAN Verbindung von Atheros (AR8121/AR8113) sowie ein WLAN Modul von Intel (4965AGN) mit Vorbereitung auf den schnellen n-Standard.
Weiters beherbergt das Aspire 8920G ein 56k V.92 Modem, welches in unseren Breiten vermutlich kaum mehr Verwendung finden wird, als auch ein Bluetooth 2.0+EDR Modul zur drahtlosen Kommunikation mit diversen externen Geräten wie etwa einer BT-Maus, BT Headset oder aber ihrem Bluetooth fähigen Handy oder PDA.
Durch die ins Display integrierte Webcam (Acer Crystal Eye, Auflösung 640x480 Pixel) ist das Notebook auch fit für Video Konferenzen.
Für eine erhöhte Datensicherheit sorgt der integrierte Fingerprint Reader, welcher zwischen den beiden Touchpadtasten Platz findet. Natürlich kann der Fingerprint Reader auch als Ersatzeingabemöglichkeit bei Passwortabfragen konfiguriert werden, was neben der Sicherheit auch den Bedienungskomfort erhöht.
An Zubehör bietet das Acer Aspire 8920G relativ wenig. Im Karton findet sich neben dem unverzichtbaren Netzgerät lediglich noch eine Demo DVD/BluRay Disk und ein gedrucktes Handbuch. Eine Recovery Option steht nur über die auf der Harddisk vorgespeicherten Daten zur Verfügung.
Die aufgrund des Displayformates zur Verfügung stehende Gehäusebreite nutzt das Aspire 8920G einerseits durch einen Nummernblock rechts neben der Standardtastatur und andererseits durch die CineDash Media Console auf der gegenüber liegenden Seitenkante. Bei einer Gehäusebreite von stolzen 44 Zentimetern bleibt dabei sogar noch etwas Platz um rechts neben der Tastatur einige Zusatztasten zur Steuerung von Bluetooth und WLAN als auch Schnelltasten zum Öffnen des Standard Mail Programms und Internet Browsers zu platzieren.
Trotz dieses umfassenden Tastenangebotes weisen die gebotenen Tasten überwiegend eine gute Größe auf und bergen auch hinsichtlich Layouts keine bösen Überraschungen. Interessant ist wiederum die etwas ungewöhnliche Platzierung einer $ und einer € Taste im Bereich der etwas verkleinerten Cursor Tasten.
Die glatten, beinahe spiegelnden Tasten fügen sich zwar optisch sehr gut in das Gesamterscheinungsbild des Aspires ein, können aber hinsichtlich Haptik nicht überzeugen. Die glatte Oberfläche wirkt beinahe klebrig, was sich bei schnellem Tippen unangenehm auswirkt. Abgesehen davon fällt das Tippgefühl durchaus passabel aus und wird von einem leichten möglichen Eindrücken der Tastatureinheit und dem damit einher gehenden weichen und leicht federnden Tippgefühl geprägt. Eine wesentliche Verbesserung konnten wir bei der Geräuschkulisse der Tastatur feststellen. Auch bei etwas energischerem Tippen hält sich diese im Gegensatz zum getesteten Acer 6920G im Rahmen.
Das Touchpad verfügt abgesehen von einer dezenten Linie als Abgrenzung des Touchpad Bereiches nach oben und unten hin über eine zum Aspire 6920G identische Optik. Auch das Ansprechverhalten der rauen aber überaus angenehm zu bedienenden Oberfläche fiel zu unserer Zufriedenheit aus. Die Touchpadtasten lassen sich im äußeren Bereich gut drücken, zeigen aber rund um den zentral integrierten Fingerprint Reader eine störende Tote Zone in der sie nur schlecht bis kaum ansprechen.
Identisch zum kleineren Kollegen des 8920G fällt weiters die bereits angesprochene CineDash Media Console aus. Im Gegensatz zu jener im Aspire 6920G funktionierte diese aber von Anfang an. Beim Ansprechverhalten der Media Console konnten wir vor allem die die Lautstärkeregelung als oftmals etwas störrisch ausmachen. Problematisch fällt vor allem die exakte Justierung des Lautstärkeniveaus aus, das besonderes im Bereich von 0-20% beinahe zum Ding der Unmöglichkeit wird.
Kritik müssen wir auch am an sich gut gemeinten Hold Button äußern. Dieser soll eine ungewollte Bedienung des Panels verhindern. Da der Holdbutton jedoch wie auch die umliegenden Tasten als berührungssensitives Feld ausgeführt ist, reicht auch hier eine leichte Berührung um diesen zu aktivieren, oder viel schlimmer noch, zu deaktivieren. Im praktischen Test passierte das speziell im Gaming Betrieb sehr oft, wobei die Nummerntasten oftmals für Gruppierungsfunktionen genutzt werden und sich hier der Hold Button stets in Reichweite der linken Hand befindet. Besser wäre hier entweder ein etwas abgelegenerer Button oder aber eine gegen unabsichtliche Bedienung gesicherte Taste.
Mit dem 16 Zoll Display aus der Aspire 6920G Serie und dem 18.4 Zoll Panel der 8920G Notebooks führt Acer zwei völlig neue Displaykategorien am Notebookmarkt ein. Die Panels zeichnen sich vor allem durch das 16:9 Kino Format aus, das eine Vollbilddarstellung von Videoinhalten in bester Auflösung ermöglicht. Im Falle des 18.4“ Panels des Acer Aspire 8920G steht eine Full HD kompatible Auflösung von 1920x1080 Pixel zur Verfügung.
Trotz optimaler Unterstützung von Videoinhalten muss man jedoch bedenken, dass die Höhe des dargestellten Bildes im Vergleich zu 16:10 Panels und in weiterer Folge zu den beinahe mittlerweile völlig vom Markt verschwundenen 4:3 Displays, je nach gewählter Auflösung deutlich geringer ausfällt. Dies ist vor allem bei Anwendungen mit Text (A4) aber auch bei diversen Layout- und Grafikprogrammen nicht unbedingt optimal. Im Falle des 8920G ist davon jedoch abzusehen, da mit einer relativ hohen Auflösung von 1920x1080 Pixel noch genügend Platz für diverse Anwendungen bleibt.

Bei der Messung der Displayhelligkeit erreichte das Full HD Display eine maximale Helligkeit von guten 203 cd/m² im linken unteren Messquadranten. Auffällig bei der Ausleuchtung des Displays wird vor allem ein Sinken der Helligkeit in den oberen Eckbereichen auf bis zu 163.1 cd/m², das eine Ausleuchtung von gerade noch „guten“ 80.3% bedingt. Die durchschnittliche Helligkeit des spiegelnden Panels von guten 184.4 cd/m² spricht ebenso für das an sich helle Display.
Punkten kann das HD Panel auch beim Kontrast. Mit einem Schwarzwert von 0.28 cd/m² erreicht das Display ein maximal mögliches Kontrastverhältnis von hervorragenden 725:1. Auch subjektiv kann das Panel mit einem überaus scharfen und kräftigen Bild überzeugen. Leider muss man sich mit den besonders bei etwas ungünstigen Blickwinkeln verstärkt auftretenden Spiegelungen abfinden.
Dies gilt auch für den Einsatz des Gerätes im Freien. Das dargestellte Bild wird hier vor allem durch Reflexionen und diverse Spiegelungen beeinträchtigt. Für einen umfassenden Outdoor Einsatz eignet sich das 4 Kilogramm Gerät damit eher weniger.
Die stabilen Blickwinkel fallen insgesamt, in Anbetracht eines eher stationären Einsatzes des Notebooks, akzeptabel aus. Bei einer zunehmenden Abweichung vom idealen Blickwinkel im vertikalen Bereich sind die üblichen Bildveränderungen in Form einer Überstrahlung bzw. einer Verdunklung des dargestellten Bildes zu beobachten. Im horizontalen Bereich wird die Bildqualität vor allem durch zunehmende Spiegelungen beeinträchtigt.
Das Acer Aspire 8920G in der von uns getesteten Ausstattung (934G64Bn) wird auch unter dem Zusatz „Gaming“ geführt. Dies lässt natürlich die Erwartungen an das Notebook steigen, insbesondere hinsichtlich Spieleperformance. Die aktuellen Modelle der 8920G Palette sind allesamt mit Prozessoren aus dem Hause Intel ausgestattet. Die Einstiegsvariante bietet eine Core 2 Duo „Merom“ CPU mit 2.0 GHz. Weiters erhältlich sind auch eine T8300 CPU und eine T9300 „Penryn“ CPU in der Top-Ausstattung, wie auch in unserem Testsample.
Der T9300 Penryn Prozessor von Intel bietet eine Taktung von 2.5 GHz und ist vor allem aufgrund seines 6MB großen L2-Cache gleichgetakteten Merom Kernen deutlich überlegen. Bei der Grafikkarte bedient sich Acer Chips von nVIDIA. Zum Einsatz kommt entweder eine Geforce 9500M GS oder aber eine Geforce 9650M GS Grafikkarte mit 512MB GDDR3 Videospeicher. Hier handelt es sich um den Nachfolger der Geforce 8700M GT Grafikkarte, die bisher ebenso in als „Gaming-Einstiegs-Notebooks“ klassifizierten Geräten zum Einsatz kam.
Nachdem schon die Geforce 9500M GS, der Nachfolger der 8600M GS Grafikkarte bei diversen Benchmarks überaus gut abgeschnitten hat, war nun auch bei der nächstgrößeren Grafikkarte vor allem das Abschneiden im direkten Vergleich zum Vorgänger interessant.
Im 3DMark 2005/2006 Benchmark Vergleich positioniert sich das Aspire 8920G in etwa auf einer Ebene mit dem vergleichbar ausgestatteten Asus G2SG (T9300, 8700M GT). Übermäßige Leistungszuwächse können hier nicht festgestellt werden.
Überaus großzügig gibt man sich seitens Acer bei der Arbeitsspeicher Ausstattung. Alle aktuell erhältlichen Modelle des Aspire 8920G verfügen über insgesamt 4096MB RAM. Da auch alle Geräte mit einem 32Bit Betriebssystem ausgeliefert werden (Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate), können davon jedoch nur etwas mehr als 3GB effektiv vom System genutzt werden.
Ähnliches gilt auch für die beiden verbauten Festplatten von Western Digital, die mit je 320GB Speicherkapazität insgesamt 640GB Bruttokapazität bieten, wovon allerdings ein nicht unwesentlicher Teil durch das Betriebsystem, diverse vorinstallierte Software und de Recovery Daten belegt wird. Bei einer Geschwindigkeit von 5400 U/min zeigten die verbauten Festplatten im HDTune Performance Test eine sehenswerte Performance hinsichtlich Übertragungsraten und Zugriffszeit.
Die erreichten 6068 Punkte im PCMark 2005 Benchmarktest attestieren dem Aspire 8920G eine sehr gute Office Performance. Durchschnittlich fiel das Ergebnis im Cinebench R10 Benchmarktest aus. Interessanterweise konnte trotz identer CPU, im Rendering Test nur ein deutlich schlechteres Ergebnis als das Asus G2SG eingefahren werden. Im Shading Test (OpenGL) liegt das Acer mit der Geforce 9650M GS Grafik aber deutlich voran.

Nun zur Kernfrage des Leistungskapitels: Wo liegt die Geforce 9650M GS Grafikkarte im Vergleich zur 8700M GT von nVIDIA? Um dies zu beantworten vergleichen wir das Acer Aspire 8920G mit dem erst kürzlich getesteten Asus G2SG mit gleicher CPU (T9300) und Geforce 8700M GT Grafik mit 512MB GDDR3 Speicher.
Im ersten Test anhand des Echtzeit Strategie Games World in Conflict kann man bei einer Auflösung von 1024x768 und Medium Details, bei der durchschnittlichen Framerate einen leichten Vorteil (+4 fps) für die neue Geforce 9650M GS Grafik erkennen. Bei High Details (DirectX10) schrumpft der Vorsprung auf marginale und eher vernachlässigbare 1 fps zusammen. Ein sehr ähnliches Bild erhält man bei einer Erhöhung der Auflösung auf 1280x720 Pixel. Interessant ist hier jedoch, dass auf High Details vom Asus G2SG in dieser Auflösung ein etwas besseres Ergebnis (+5 fps bei der durchschnittlichen Framerate) geliefert wird, während bei Medium Details doch das Acer mit 9650M GS Grafik die Nase voran hat (+7 fps).
Insgesamt ist damit kaum ein nennenswerter Vorsprung der Geforce 9650M GS Grafik auszumachen. Im praktischen Test konnten auf der Map Seaside im Multiplayergame 3vs.3 bei einer Auflösung von 1280x800 und High Details, 20-30 fps erreicht werden. Das Spiel war dabei noch relativ gut spielbar.
Ein sehr ähnliches Ergebnis lieferte der Vergleich im Crysis Benchmarktest. Bei einer Auflösung von 1024x768 liegen das Asus G2SG und das Acer Aspire 8920G in allen getesteten Detailstufen praktisch gleich auf.
Ein direkter Vergleich von höheren Auflösungen war leider nicht möglich, da das Acer die beim Asus G2SG getestete Auflösung von 1440x900 nicht unterstützt. In der angenäherten Auflösung von 1400x1050 Pixel, also einer etwas höheren Auflösung, erreicht das Acer Aspire knapp schlechtere Ergebnisse als das Asus G2SG mit Geforce 8700M GT Grafik.
Auch hier kann man letztlich darauf hinweisen, dass ein wesentlicher Leistungsunterschied der beiden Grafikkarten nicht ersichtlich wird. Im praktischen Test des Crysis Demos war bei einer Auflösung von 1280x800 und Medium Details, mit durchschnittlich 15-25 fps ein noch einigermaßen spielbare Performance gegeben.
Weiters wurden die aktuellen Ego-Shooter Highlights Call of Duty 4 sowie Unreal Tournament 3 dem praktischen Spieletest unterzogen. Während bei Auflösungen von 1024x768 und 1280x800 die erzielten Frameraten mit 55-60 fps beim schnellen Ego Shooter UT3 noch im wünschenswerten Bereich lagen, konnte ab 1400x1050 bis hin zur maximalen, nativen Auflösung von 1920x1080 ein Einbruch auf bis zu 30 fps beobachtet werden. Damit bleibt das Game zwar flüssig spielbar, in knallharten Multiplayer Partien könnte ein kurzfristiger Performance Einbruch aber über Sieg oder Niederlage entscheiden.
Ähnliches gilt auch für Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare, wo sich bereits ab einer Auflösung von 1280x800 (Antialiasing deaktiviert) hin und wieder Einbrüche auf bis zu weniger als 20 fps einstellen. Hier ist letztlich auch mit kurzen Aussetzern zu rechnen, die insbesondere in hitzigen Gefechten den Spielspass trüben.
Lautstärke
Im Idle Betrieb bzw. bei leichter Office Last kann das Acer Aspire 8920G mit einem angenehm leisen Betrieb punkten. Der Systemlüfter ist hier mit 35.6 dB(A) zwar stets hörbar, bleibt aber unauffällig im Hintergrund.
Etwas zu laut fällt das Betriebsgeräusch des BluRay Laufwerks im Wiedergabebetrieb aus: Mit 40.4 dB(A) muss die Soundausgabe des integrierten Laufwerks schon ordentlich nach oben geschraubt werden um das Laufgeräusch zu überlagern.
Unter Last erhöht der Lüfter seine Drehgeschwindigkeit und erreicht relativ rasch ein Niveau von relativ unproblematischen 40.8 dB(A). Unter konsequenter Auslastung der beiden CPU Kerne sowie der Grafikkarte erreicht das Acer Aspire 8920G maximal 42.6 dB(A) und bleibt damit noch immer im akzeptablen Bereich.

Zwar gibt sich das Notebook schon bei der Lautstärke als eher ruhiger Zeitgenosse, wirklich überrascht hat das Aspire 8920G aber bei der Messung der Oberflächentemperatur unter Last. Während die Oberseite mit maximal 33.6°C nur eine geringe Erwärmung erfährt, bleibt auch die Unterseite des Notebooks mit maximal nur 34.2°C vergleichsweise kühl.

Lautsprecher
Wie auch das Aspire 6920G schmückt sich das 8920G mit einer Reihe von Beschriftungen hinsichtlich Soundausgabe. „Dolby Home Theater“, „Cinematic Surround“ und vieles mehr lassen auf eine besondere Klangqualität schließen. Im praktischen Test lieferte das Notebook zwar durchaus passablen und sauberen Sound, zeigte aber auch Schwächen bei der Klangfülle und Bässen bei Musikwiedergabe, insbesondere bei geringer bis gemäßigter Lautstärke.
Das Acer Aspire 8920G verfügt über einen 71Wh Li-Ion Akku (14.8V, 4800mAh) mit dem das Notebook im Test eine maximale Akkulaufzeit von 171 Minuten (BatteryEater Classic Test) erreichen konnte. Damit liegt das Gerät im Klassenvergleich durchaus günstig. Unter Last (BatteryEater Classic Test) reichte die Energie des Akkus immerhin für 72 Minuten.
In der praxisnahen DVD Wiedergabe bei maximaler Helligkeit und aktivierten Energiesparmaßnahmen erreichte das 8920G lediglich 93 Minuten. Ein einigermaßen vertretbares Ergebnis konnte das Notebook im WLAN Betrieb mit leicht gedimmten Display erreichen - 131 Minuten.

Wie schon beim kleineren Bruder des Aspire 8920G, dem 6920G, kann das Notebook vor allem durch sein gelungenes Design und die passable Verarbeitung überzeugen. Trotz seines stolzen Gewichtes von mehr als vier Kilogramm macht das Gerät aufgrund des schlanken 16:9 Formates einen sehr agilen Eindruck.
Das Notebook bietet ergänzend zum Blu-Ray Laufwerk einen digitalen HDMI Bildausgang sowie einen optischen S/PDIF Port mit 5.1 Surround Sound Ausgabe. Damit steht einer Multimedialen Verwendung des Laptops nichts mehr im Wege.
Die Tastatur kann vor allem durch ihre optischen Vorzüge punkten. Dies gilt auch für die neue CineDash Mediaconsole. In ihrer Bedienung ist die Tastatur jedoch aufgrund ihrer glatten, beinahe klebrigen Tasten, etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig und die Media Console verlangt dem Benutzer beim Versuch die passende Lautstärke der Soundwiedergabe zu finden, hin und wieder schon reichlich Geduld ab.
Highlight des Laptops ist mit Sicherheit das 18.4 Breitbilddisplay im 16:9 Format mit einer Full HD kompatiblen Auflösung von 1920x1080 Pixel. Das Display zeigte im Test eine gute Helligkeit bei gerade noch annehmbarer Ausleuchtung sowie ein hervorragendes Kontrastverhältnis. Hin und wieder zu schaffen machte uns das relativ stark spiegelnde Display.
Das Testsample war mit einer neuen Penryn CPU von Intel und einer Geforce 9650M GS Grafikkarte von nVIDIA ausgestattet. Hoffnungen auf einen deutlichen Leistungssprung des Nachfolgerchips der 8700M GT Grafikkarte wurden zwar nicht erfüllt, dennoch liefert das Notebook insgesamt eine gute Performance im Anwendungs- und 3D Bereich.
Die Lautstärke als auch die gemessene Oberflächentemperatur des Aspire 8920G bleiben dabei stets im grünen Bereich.
Mit einer Akkulaufzeit von maximal bis zu 3 Stunden kann das Notebook auch hinsichtlich Mobilität ein paar Punkte sammeln. Insgesamt kommt das Aspire 8920G aber für einen eher stationäreren Einsatz in Frage.

Nach Einführung der neuen Penryn Prozessoren von Intel hat nun auch Apple seine MacBook und MacBook Pro Notebooks erneuert und mit den neuen in 45nm gefertigten Core 2 Duo Prozessoren ausgerüstet. Wie das neue MacBook Pro Topmodell mit 2.5 GHz Prozessor sich von den Vorgängern unterscheidet, erfahren Sie in folgendem Testbericht.
Am Gehäuse des MacBook Pro hat sich mit diesem kleinen Update von Apple nichts geändert. Die Verarbeitung und Stabilität sind nach wie vor als erstklassig zu bezeichnen und können nur noch vom MacBook Air übertroffen werden. Man kann hier also guten Gewissens auf unseren Testbericht des älteren 2.2 GHz Modells verweisen. Aufgrund unserer bisherigen Erfahrungen mit dem Vorgängermodell, können wir auch nach einem halben Jahr intensiver Benutzung nichts an dem Gehäuse aussetzen.
Auch die etwas mäßige Schnittstellenausstattung bleibt beim neuen Penryn Modell unverändert (Schnittstellen beim MacBook Pro 2.2 / 2.4). Besonders einen dritten USB Anschluss vermisst man in der Praxis Anwendung am meisten.
Wie schon beim MacBook Air verzichtet Apple nun auch beim MacBook Pro auf das Beilegen der MacRemote Fernbedienung (kostet im Apple Store derzeit 19 Euro).

Bei der Tastatur findet man die nach Außen hin auffälligste Änderung. Die Beschriftung und das Layout wurden an die aktuelle Generation (wie bei dem aktuellen iMac oder MacBook Air) angepasst.
Die Funktionstasten wurden umbelegt. Zum Beispiel sind F3 und F4 nun dedizierte Exposé und Dashboard Shortcuts. Die zweite Enter Taste (die uns nie klar war wofür sie gut ist) wurde zu einer zweiten Alt Taste und die Apple Taste wurde zu "cmd" umbenannt. Trotz der Umstellungen bleibt das Layout für Windows Umsteiger immer noch sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig.
Von den haptischen Eigenschaften blieb die Tastatur gleich. Sie kann immer noch als weich und minimal schwergängig beschrieben werden. Im Vergleich zu der neuen, an das MacBook angelehnte Tastatur des MacBook Air , gefällt sie uns subjektiv weniger gut. Dies ist jedoch sehr von den Vorlieben des Benutzers abhängig.
Beim Trackpad gab es die zweite große Neuerung. Apple verbaut nun den vom MacBook Air bekannten Broadcom Chip, welcher erweiterte Multitouch Eingaben (wie beim Air) erlaubt. Dadurch kann man nun auch mit 3 Fingern "blättern", Bilder bequem mit zwei Fingern drehen und vergrößern und wie bisher mit zwei Fingern scrollen. Die Integration in Mac OS X ist durchaus gelungen, jedoch bleibt noch viel Raum für weitere innovative Funktionen.
Weiters wurde das Tastengeräusch der einzelnen Trackpadtaste gedämpft. Dadurch macht die Benutztung deutlich mehr Spass obwohl eine zweite Toucpad Taste immer noch schmerzlich vermisst wird - auch und Mac OS X.
Eigentlich sollte sich beim Display laut Apple nichts geändert haben. In unserem direkten Vergleich ergab sich jedoch ein wesentlich besserer Kontrastwert durch einen deutlich geringeren Schwarzwert von 0,21 cd/m2 versus 0,6 cd/m2 beim alten 2,2 GHz Modell. Da jedoch die Kollegen von Notebookjournal (beim kleineren 2,4 GHz Modell) zu einem ähnlichen Messergebnis wie bei unserem älteren Modell kamen, könnte es sich hier auch um ein Ausreisser in der Serie handeln (Messfehler können wir durch Mehrfachmessungen ausschließen).
Unser Testgerät erreicht einen hervorragenden maximalen Kontrast von 1441:1 (im Vergleich zu den guten 500:1 in anderen Tests bzw. den Vorgängern).
Die restlichen Daten waren mit 269 versus 280 cd/m2 in der Bildschirmmitte und vergleichbaren Blickwinkeln sehr ähnlich. Dadurch bleibt das MacBook Pro immer noch voll einsatzfähig im Außenbereich.

Die neuen in 45nm gefertigten Core 2 Duo Prozessoren (Codename Penryn) sind die größte Neuerung im MacBook Pro 4.1. Durch eine Vergrößerung des Level 2 Caches von 4 auf 6 MB im getesteten Topmodell und diversen weiteren kleineren Verbesserungen am Kern, steigt die Leistung bei gleicher Taktrate um etwa 5%. Dies kann man auch in unserem großen Penryn Vergleichstest nachlesen. Dadurch bleibt der Geschwindigkeitsvorsprung des neuen Modells eher bescheiden, jedoch war schon das alte Modell unter den schnellsten Notebooks seiner Klasse.
Das kleinere MacBook Pro erhielt nun einen 2.4 GHz getakteten Core 2 Duo, jedoch mit nur 3 MB L2 Cache. Dadurch bleibt die Leistung im Vergleich zum alten 2.2 GHz Modell in etwa gleich (bei geringerem Stromverbrauch).

Die Speicherausstattung der Grafikkarte wurde bei den neuen Modelln nun auch verdoppelt (256 MB beim 2.4 GHz Modell, 512 MB beim 2.5 GHz Modell) und sollte nun auch für aktuelle Spiele ausreichen. Mit über 8000 3DMark05 Punkte ist das neue Modell etwa 10% schneller als das alte 2.4 GHz Topmodell. Dank GDDR3 Speicherausstattung ist dies weiterhin ein sehr guter Wert (besonders in dieser Gewichtsklasse) und machen das Notebook voll spielefähig (wenn auch moderne DirectX 10 Spiele nicht in höchster Auflösung gespielt werden können).
Lautstärke
Da Apple das selbe Kühlungssystem wie im alten MacBook Pro verbaut, ändert sich an der Geräuschentwicklung eigentlich nichts. Durch die kühleren Penryn CPUs erhöhen die zwei verbauten Lüfter jedoch erst deutlich später ihre Drehzahl und bleibt dadurch noch länger leise. Damit kann es weiterhin seine Position als eines der leisesten Notebooks (ohne starke Last) dieser Klasse (spielefähige Grafikkarte, schneller Prozessor) halten.
Bei starker Last drehen die zwei Lüfter jedoch weiterhin ordentlich auf - mit einer etwas unangenehmen Frequenz. Beim Spielen ist dies jedoch weniger störend.
Hitzeentwicklung
Da das Aluminiumgehäuse auch gleichzeitig als Kühlkörper dient, wird der Multimedia Laptop von Apple auch weiterhin wärmer als die Konkurrenz. Besonders die Unterseite kann sich bei langen Volllastphasen auf bis zu 50°C erhitzen. Im Schnitt unter normaler Belastung bleibt das Gehäuse jedoch lediglich "handwarm".

Lautsprecher
Die Lautsprecher und das Soundsystem blieben bei diesem Update unberührt und bieten weiterhin eine befriedigende Performance mit Schwächen bei der Maximallautstärke und den Basstönen.
Aufgrund des stromsparenden Prozessors hält das neue MacBook Pro etwa 7-13% länger durch bevor es zur nächsten Steckdose muss. Das sind durchaus beachtliche Werte wenn man bedenkt, dass nur der Prozessor getauscht wurde. Die versprochenen 5 Stunden schafft das MacBook Pro z.B. beim Websurfen (im Test sogar etwas darüber). Zusammen mit dem für ein 15" Gerät geringem Gewicht und kompakten Ausmaßen, kann man dem Designer-Notebook eine hervorragende Mobilität in seiner Klasse zusprechen.
Der wesentlichste Aspekt des Penryn-Updates ist die verlängerte Akkulaufzeit. Über 5 Stunden beim Websurfen in MacOS X sind durchaus beachtlich für den relativ kleinen Akku. Weiters stieg die Performance allgemein um etwa 5-10%, je nach Anwendung, mitunter auch dank des verdoppelten Videospeichers.
Bei den Eingabegeräten gefällt am besonders die leisere Trackpad Taste. Das laute Klicken hat nun endlich ein Ende. Auch die neuen Multitouch-Funktionen können überzeugen, sind jedoch nicht so intuitiv wie beim iPhone ausgefallen.
Dadurch bleibt das MacBook Pro nach wie vor ein teures Multimedianotebook, das durch geringes Gewicht, erstklassige Verarbeitung, gelungenes Design, geringe Lautstärke, gute Performance und gute Bildqualität unserer Meinung nach seinen Preis dennoch Wert ist. Der teure Aufpreis für die Garantieverlängerung auf 3 Jahre, der gerade bei einem so teuren Notebook empfehlenswert ist, stößt jedoch weiterhin sauer auf. Besitzer des alten MacBook Pro müssen jedoch nicht umbedingt umsteigen.
In der Verwendung als reines Windows Notebook muss man weiterhin wegen der nicht ganz perfekten Abstimmung (geringere Akkulaufzeit, schlechtere Touchpadtreiber, Tastaturbeschriftung) einige Punkte abziehen.

Im Wettstreit der XL-Notebooks um das größte Display schickt HP das Pavilion HDX ins Rennen. Der 20-Zöller versucht sich dabei vor allem durch einen innovativen Display Öffnungsmechanismus von der ohnehin sehr spärlich gesäten Konkurrenz abzusetzen - offenbar mit Erfolg. Das Kürzel HDX ist mittlerweile zu einem Synonym für innovatives Design geworden. Hinsichtlich Ausstattung kann das aktuelle Modell vor allem mit der Geforce 8800M GTS Grafik punkten.
Nach unserem Kurztest des Pavilion HDX 9130EG, noch in der Ausstattung mit Intel Merom CPU und ATI Radeon 2600XT Grafik, hatten wir nun das Vergnügen uns das aktualisierte Modell mit Penryn Prozessor und leistungsstarker Geforce 8800M GTS Grafik von nVIDIA im Rahmen eines ausführlichen Tests näher anzusehen.
Rein äußerlich hat sich offenbar nichts verändert. Wesentlich einfacher lies sich allerdings der unkonventionelle Klappmechanismus des Displays beim vorliegenden Modell bedienen. War das zuletzt getestete HDX noch sehr anfällig für Schrammen und Kratzer verursacht durch das Display im Bereich oberhalb der Tastatur, so konnten wir beim Pavilion HDX 9320EG eine relativ präzise Führung des Displays sowie eine gut funktionierende Sicherung gegen verfrühtes Vorschieben des Displays beobachten. Offenbar hat HP hier etwas nachgebessert.
Ein weiterer wesentlicher Unterschied zum Vorgängermodell besteht in den verbauten Kernkomponenten des HDX. Zum Einsatz in unserem Testsample kommt eine aktuelle T8100 Penryn CPU sowie eine leistungsstarke, wenn auch sehr selten am Notebookmarkt anzutreffende, Geforce 8800M GTS Grafikkarte.
„Dragon“ - So nennt HP sein Oberflächenfinish, also eine spezielle Lackierungsprozedur bei der die aufgebrachten Farben und Formen besonders effektvoll und dauerhaft am Gehäuse Platz finden. Im Falle des Pavilion HDX handelt es sich hierbei um eine hauchdünne Ornamentik mit zahlreichen Linien und Mustern, die erst bei genauerem Hinsehen überhaupt erkennbar werden.
Dominiert wird das Gehäuse des HDX 9320EG vor allem durch die hochglänzenden Oberflächen. Das Notebook gleicht einem geschliffenen Kristall der an allen Seiten das Licht reflektiert und bricht. Hinsichtlich Auftritts sammelt das Pavilion HDX damit schon einmal ordentlich Punkte. Beim Hantieren mit dem Gerät, sofern dies bei einem Gesamtgewicht von sage und schreibe 7020 Gramm überhaupt noch einigermaßen möglich ist, kann das Chassis allerdings auch betreffend Verarbeitung und Robustheit überzeugen.
Die verwendeten lackierten Kunststoffbauteile können ihre „Plastik-Herkunft“ zwar nicht ganz verleugnen, aufgrund der soliden Bauweise bietet das Gehäuse aber dennoch ein überaus angenehmes haptisches Erlebnis. Mit dem Betasten des Gehäuses sollte man sich aber dennoch etwas zurückhalten. Schon nach einigen Minuten Verwendung wird ein großer Schwachpunkt des Notebooks offensichtlich: Zahlreiche unschöne Fingerabdrücke zieren schnell das Gehäuse, insbesondere den glänzenden schwarzen Displaydeckel.
Die Baseunit gibt sich außerdem überaus unempfindlich für einwirkende Druckkräfte. Sollte man es schaffen, quasi im Shaolin-Stil all seine Kräfte in den Unterarmen zu sammeln, das Notebook an der Vorderkante zu packen und einige Zentimeter von der Tischoberfläche abzuheben, so wird man feststellen, dass das Gehäuse auch Biegekräfte überaus gut wegstecken kann. Auch das mächtige 20 Zoll Display hinterlässt einen überaus robusten Eindruck, wenngleich es bei punktueller Belastung des Displaydeckels zu leichten Verformungen der Oberfläche kommen kann. Veränderungen des Displays bleiben allerdings aus.
Wie eingangs schon erwähnt, verrichtet der innovative Display-Klappmechanismus eine einwandfreie Arbeit. Abgesehen von leisen Knarzgeräuschen lässt sich das Panel ohne Probleme in eine für den Benutzer angenehme Position bringen. Auf einen Verriegelungsmechanismus wird dabei jedoch verzichtet.
Von welcher Richtung aus man nun auch das HP Pavilion HDX betrachtet, Anschlussports findet man praktisch rund um das gesamte Gehäuse. Beginnen wir an der schmal zulaufenden Vorderkante des Notebooks. Hier werden, zentral im Bereich des Touchpads gelegen, drei 3.5mm Buchsen neben einem Infrarot Modul platziert. Eine der Buchsen dient als Mikrofon Eingang, während gleich zwei Buchsen zum Anschluss von Kopfhörern dienen. Damit wird lautloser Filmgenuss auch zu zweit möglich, ohne diverse zusätzliche Adapter.
Üppig geht es an der linken Gehäusekante weiter. Hier kommen im hinteren Bereich zwei USB 2.0 Ports, gefolgt vom LAN Anschluss zu liegen. Direkt davor findet man einen Expansion Port Anschluss mit dem das Pavilion HDX via HP Quickdock mit zahlreichen weiteren Anschlussoptionen ausgestattet werden, bzw. belegte Anschlüsse am Gerät auf einen Stecker zusammengelegt werden können.
Neben einem herkömmlichen VGA Ausgang bietet das Pavilion HDX auch einen digitalen, zukunftssicheren HDMI Port. Damit aber nicht genug. An der rechten Seite findet sich des Weiteren ein eSATA Port, der zum Anschluss von externen Festplatten dient und dabei erstklassige Übertragungsraten bietet - ideal für Systembackups. Neben einem Firewire Anschluss und einem 5in1 Cardreader (SD, MMC, MS, MSPro, xD) bietet das HDX außerdem auch noch einen ExpressCard Slot im vorderen Bereich.
An der Rückseite des Notebooks dreht sich alles rund um Audio und Video. Neben einer 3.5mm Buchse für den beigelegten IR-Empfänger findet man eine Audio Line-In Buchse (3.5mm), S-Video Eingang und Koax-Eingang zum Anschluss einer Antenne für den integrierten DVB-T Receiver. An der anderen Seite neben dem zentralen Displayscharnier bietet das Pavilion HDX eine Reihe von Audio Ports zum Anschluss an ein externes Surround Soundsystem an. Dazu zählen je ein 3.5mm Port für analogen Soundausgang links/rechts, Back links/rechts, Center/Subwoofer und Front links/rechts. In weiterer Folge ist auch noch der Netzanschluss an der Rückseite zu finden.
An der rechten Gehäuseseite ist das Notebook etwas spärlicher bestückt. Hier wurden zwei weitere USB 2.0 Ports und eine Kensington Buchse im hinteren Bereich platziert. Mittig wurde das DVD Multi Laufwerk mit Lighscribe-Funktion angeordnet. Damit können passende Rohlinge auch direkt beschriftet werden. Die Ausstattungsvariante HDX9350EG verfügt über ein BluRay Laufwerk.
Auch hinsichtlich Kommunikation gibt sich das HDX üppig ausgestattet. So bietet das Notebook eine 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Schnittstelle von Marvell (Yukon 88E8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller) und ein modernes Intel 4965 AGN WLAN Modul. Damit kann man sowohl kabelgebunden als auch drahtlos auf aktuell beste Übertragungsperformance zurückgreifen.
Darüber hinaus ist das Pavilion HDX außerdem mit einem Bluetooth Modul und einem Infrarot Port ausgestattet.
Als Sicherheitsfeature aber gleichzeitig auch als Komfort-Tool fungiert der angebotene Fingerprint Reader, welcher im zentralen Bereich oberhalb der Tastatur inmitten der Zusatztasten Platz findet. Dieser ermöglicht sowohl eine Benutzerautorisierung beim Systemstart als auch eine vereinfachte Passworteingabe im täglichen Betrieb.
Als Zubehör legt HP dem Pavilion HDX eine DVB-T Antenne samt passendem Adapter und ein Anschlusskabel für den externen IR-Empfänger für die Fernbedienung bei. Darüber hinaus findet man auch noch ein überaus gut strukturiertes und übersichtliches Handbuch in der schön gestalteten, aufwändigen Verpackung. Eine passende Tasche bzw. Schutzhülle wäre unserer Meinung nach noch sinnvoll gewesen, da sich die Suche nach einer Notebooktasche in dieser Größenordnung mitunter sicherlich etwas schwierig gestaltet.
Mit Gehäuseabmessungen von unglaublichen 47.5 x 34.0 Zentimetern bietet das Pavilion HDX reichlich Platz für Tastatur und diverse Eingabegeräte. Die Standardtastatur wird seitlich zentriert und etwas nach vorne versetzt, um bei dem tiefen Gehäuse für die Hände noch gut erreichbar zu bleiben. Schon die normalen Zifferntasten weisen mit 13 x 13 Millimeter eine gute Größe auf, eine zweizeilige Enter-Taste wirkt dabei beinahe selbstverständlich.
Rechts neben der Tastatur findet ein Nummernblock Platz, der die Eingabe von Zahlenmaterial immens vereinfacht und beschleunigt. Im Bereich links neben der Tastatur wurde der zur Verfügung stehende Platz für die Anbringung einer entnehmbaren Fernbedienung genutzt. Diese kann durch einen Schieber entriegelt werden und dient danach zur bequemen Steuerung des Pavilion HDX bequem von der Couch aus. Damit steht das HDX einem herkömmlichen TV-Gerät um nichts mehr nach, im Gegenteil.
Die Tastatur selbst zeigt in ihrem Tastenlayout keinerlei Ungereimtheiten. Einzig die etwas klein ausgefallene rechte Shift Taste führte bei Schreibproben hin und wieder zu Fehlgriffen und bedarf einer gewissen Eingewöhnungsphase. Hinsichtlich Tippgefühl fällt ein etwas ruckartiges Feedback beim Tippen sowie ein vergleichsweise hartes Stopp am Ende des
Tastenhubes auf.
Das Touchpad wurde direkt in die Handballenauflagen integriert und zeigt eine strukturierte Oberfläche. Dennoch muss man dem Pad vorhalten, dass die Gleiteigenschaften der Oberfläche nicht ideal sind. Lediglich mit staubtrockenen Fingerkuppen lässt sich der Mauszeiger flink über das Display bewegen, ansonsten fällt die Oberfläche beinahe klebrig aus. Die beiden Touchpadtasten bieten einen tiefen und weichen Hubweg der ebenso etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig ausfällt.
Darüber hinaus bietet das HDX 9320EG eine Reihe von berührungssensitiven Zusatztasten oberhalb der Tastatur. Auch hier können diverse Multimediafunktionen gesteuert werden, bis hin zur Lautstärkeregelung und Feinabstimmung des Klangspektrums (Treble/Bass). Ein nettes Feature ist der hier angebotene Auswurfknopf für das DVD Laufwerk.
Wuchtige 20,1 Zoll, also genau 51.054 Zentimeter misst die Diagonale des Displays. Damit zählt das Pavilion HDX auch zu den größten aktuell verfügbaren Notebooks. Das WSXGA Panel bietet dabei eine Auflösung von 1680x1050 Pixel, was eine überaus gute Übersicht am Display gewährleistet und insbesondere bei Anwendungen mit vielen Fenstern oder Werkzeugkästen einen großen Vorteil darstellt.
Das als „High-Definition HP Ultra BrightView Widescreen-Display” beschriebene Display kann bei der Messung der Displayhelligkeit auch in diesem Sinne überzeugen. Maximal leistet das Panel 261 cd/m², ein durchaus gutes Ergebnis. Überzeugen kann auch die sehr gute Ausleuchtung des Panels. Im linken oberen Messquadranten sank die Helligkeit auf lediglich 220 cd/m² was eine Ausleuchtung von 84.3% bedingt.

Auch beim Kontrast hat das Notebook einiges zu bieten. Mit einem sehr niedrigen Schwarzwert von 0.30 cd/m² erreicht das HDX 9320EG ein hervorragendes maximales Kontrastverhältnis von 870:1. Auch subjektiv wirkt das dargestellte Bild ausgesprochen scharf und kräftig.
Der Verwendung im Freien steht einerseits das hohe Gewicht des Gerätes von immerhin knapp über 7 Kilogramm als auch das relativ stark spiegelnde Display im Wege. Schon bei der Anwendung in Innenräumen kann es bei ungünstigen Blickwinkeln bzw. hellen Umgebungslichtverhältnissen zu störenden Reflexionen am Display kommen.
Davon abgesehen gibt sich da Pavilion HDX hinsichtlich Blickwinkel durchaus passabel. Im vertikalen Bereich kommt es zwar bei einem größeren Abweichen vom idealen Blickwinkel zu einem leichten Überstrahlen bzw. zu der üblichen Verdunklung der Bildinhalte, im horizontalen Bereich gibt sich das Display aber großzügiger. Hier wird der mögliche Blickwinkel durch das Auftreten von Spiegelungen bei flacheren Blickwinkeln limitiert.
Ordentlich nachgebessert hat HP bei den Kernkomponenten der aktuellen Pavilion HDX Modelle. So bekommen die Geräte neue Penryn CPUs von Intel spendiert, und auch bei der Grafikkarte wird mit einer Geforce 8800M GTS bei allen Modellen für reichlich 3D Power gesorgt. Modellbezogene Unterschiede gibt es bei der verbauten CPU. Hier kommt je nach Modell entweder eine T8100 CPU mit 2.1 GHz und 3MB L2-Cache bzw. eine deutlich leistungsstärkere T9300 Penryn CPU mit 2.5 GHz und 6MB L2-Cache zum Einsatz. Etwas ungewöhnlich, weil sehr selten anzutreffen, ist die Geforce 8800M GTS Grafikkarte von nVIDIA. Außer im Pavilion HDX ist diese Grafikkarte aktuell lediglich noch in einem Gateway Notebook zu finden welches jedoch ausschließlich in den USA angeboten wird. Im europäischen Raum hat das HP Pavilion HDX damit praktisch eine Sonderposition inne.
Bei der Geforce 8800M GTS handelt es sich grundsätzlich um eine abgespeckte 8800M GTX Grafikkarte. Sie verfügt jedoch nur über 64 Unified Sader im Gegensatz zu 96 bei der Geforce 8800M GTX. Wie auch die schnellere GTX Version verfügt auch die 8800M GTS über 512MB schnellen GDDR3 Videospeicher, angebunden über einen 256Bit Speicherbus.
Anhand des 3D Mark Benchmarkvergleichs kann man schnell die Positionierung der 8800M GTS Grafikkarte erkennen. Im Vergleich der 3DMark 2006 Benchmarkergebnisse reiht sich das HP Pavilion HDX 9320EG mit etwas Abstand hinter dem Alienware m15x mit Geforce 8800M GTX Grafik ein und bleibt noch vor der 8600M GT SLI Grafik im Toshiba Satellite X200.
Das HP Pavilion HDX 9320EG ist darüber hinaus mit 3GB Arbeitsspeicher (2048MB+1024MB PC5300) ausgestattet. Außerdem verfügt das Notebook über zwei Schächte zur Aufnahme jeweils einer 2.5“ Festplatte. In unserem Testmodell waren an dieser Stelle zwei 160GB Festplatten von Seagate (Momentus ST9160821AS) mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 5400 U/min und einer Gesamtkapazität von 320GB verbaut. Im HDTune Benchmarktest erreichten die Datenträger mäßige bis durchschnittliche Übertragungsraten bei vergleichsweise guter Zugriffszeit.
Der T8100 CPU ist es wohl auch zu verdanken, dass sich das HP Pavilion HDX9320EG im PCMark 2005 Benchmarkvergleich „nur“ im Mittelfeld vergleichbarer leistungsstarker Desktop Replacements platzieren kann. Noch deutlicher fällt das Ergebnis im Cinebench R10 Benchmarkvergleich aus. So liegen die erreichten Punkte im Multi und Single CPU Rendering Test doch deutlich hinter Geräten mit T9300 CPU. Etwas überraschend ist jedoch das mäßige Abschneiden der Geforce 8800M GTS Grafik im Cinebench Shading Test (OpenGL). Hier liegen sowohl Geräte mit der an sich leistungsschwächeren Geforce 8700M GT, oder aber auch der 9650M GS, dem Nachfolger der 8700M GT, klar voran. Die Nase vorne haben in dieser Disziplin eindeutig die CAD und damit auch OpenGL optimierten Quadro FX1600M Grafikkarten die ebenso auf der 8700M GT Grafik basieren.

Ausgestattet mit einer leistungsstarken Grafikkarte vom Schlage einer 8800M GTS bietet das Pavilion HDX9320EG klarerweise auch genügend Reserven um aktuelle Games mit ansprechender Auflösung und Details zu spielen. Den Beginn unserer Spiele-Testreihe macht wieder einmal der Ego-Shooter Crysis von EA Games, der auch für leistungsstarke Rechner eine harte Bewährungsprobe darstellt.
Die erreichten Ergebnisse fallen einigermaßen brauchbar, wenn auch nicht überragend aus. So können sowohl bei einer Auflösung von 1024x768 als auch bei 1280x800 Pixel bei Medium Details noch spielbare Frameraten von über 30 fps erreicht werden. Gut zu erkennen ist aber auch der Einbruch der im Benchmarkdurchlauf erreichten durchschnittlichen Framerate bei High Details auf knapp über bzw. unter 20 fps. Im praktischen Test konnten beim Anspielen des Demos im ersten Singleplayer Level bei 1280x800 Pixel und Medium Details durchaus gut spielbare Bildwiederholungsraten von 25-40 fps erreicht werden.
Im Echtzeit Strategie Game World in Conflict konnte das Pavilion HDX im Performance Test insbesondere bei Medium Details (DirectX9) mit guten Ergebnissen punkten. Bei erhöhen der Detailstufe auf High und damit auf DirectX 10, kann aber ein markanter Einbruch der Performance beobachtet werden. Bei maximaler Auflösung von 1680x1050 Pixel kann das Gerät im Benchmarktest durchschnittlich lediglich 20 fps erreichen.
Etwas besser fiel das Ergebnis im praktischen Test im Multiplayergame 3vs.3 auf der Map Seaside aus. Bei maximaler Auflösung und High Details konnten hier im Spielverlauf 25-40fps beobachtet werden. Eine Reduzierung der Details auf Stufe Medium verbesserte die Performance auf 70-100 fps.
Zum Testumfang zählte auch das Strategie Game Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance, welches als besonders CPU fordernd gilt. Im praktischen Test im Multiplayergame 2vs.2 mit Einheitenlimit auf 500, blieb die beobachtete Framerate stets zwischen 20 und 50 fps. Damit war das Spiel stets gut und flüssig spielbar.
Ein Must im Spieletest stellt natürlich auch der Ego Shooter Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare dar. Beim Anspielen der ersten beiden Single Player Missionen konnte in den Auflösungen 1024x768 sowie 1280x800 (AA aus) ein gutes Ergebnis von 50-80/90 fps beobachtet werden. Erst bei maximaler Auflösung sank die Framerate auf 30-80 fps. Hier waren dann auch häufiger kurze aber störende Aussetzer im Spiel auszumachen.
Eine überaus gute Performance legte das Pavilion HDX9320EG beim Shooter Klassiker Unreal Tournament 3 hin. Selbst bei maximaler Auflösung bleibt die im Spiel beobachtete Framerate auf 60-65 fps. Erst eine Erhöhung der Details auf maximale Einstellungen konnte die Framerate auf 50-60 fps leicht drücken.
Lautstärke
Überaus leise, egal in welchem Betriebszustand, so kann die Lautstärkecharakteristik des HDX9320EG kurz und bündig zusammengefasst werden. Im Idle Betrieb bzw. im Office Betrieb ohne allzu große Last ist das Notebook mit 34.8 dB(A) als sehr leise und nahezu als kaum hörbar zu beschreiben. Auch die Wiedergabe von DVDs passiert mit überaus leisen 36.5 dB(A).
Unter Last sind dann zwar die Systemlüfter gut zu hören, aufgrund ihres eher niederfrequenten Laufgeräusches bleibt die Geräuschkulisse des Pavilion HDX stets im absolut unkritischen Bereich. Dies bestätigt auch die Lärmpegelmessung: Maximum 42.4 dB(A).
Abgesehen von den geringen Geräuschemissionen des Notebooks konnten wir aber dennoch eine störende Lärmquelle beim Pavilion HDX ausmachen, nämlich das Netzteil. Je nach Betriebszustand des Notebooks gibt dieses leise oder auch etwas lautere Knarzgeräusche von sich, die besonders bei präsenter Positionierung des Netzteils überaus unangenehm sind.

Temperatur
Während sich die Oberseite des Notebooks mit maximal knapp über 34°C kaum nennenswert erwärmt, sind an der Geräteunterseite etwas höhere Temperaturen zu messen. Jedoch bietet auch die Höchsttemperatur an der Unterseite von 39.4°C kaum Anlass zur Kritik, ist das Notebook mit seinen 7 Kilogramm doch kaum für den Betrieb am Schoß geeignet.

Lautsprecher
Ein bei vielen Notebooks oftmals vernachlässigter Punkt ist die Qualität der Soundwiedergabe. Fairerweise muss man hier aber anmerken, dass immer mehr Hersteller auf hochqualitative Speaker bekannter Marken setzen um somit einen zusätzlichen Kaufreiz für Kunden zu schaffen. Beim Pavilion HDX9320EG würde man sich aufgrund der Multimediaausrichtung des Notebooks auch nichts anderes erwarten.
Geboten werden eine Reihe von Lautsprechern der Marke Altec-Lansing, die an der Unterkante des Displays positioniert wurden. Als Unterstützung erhält das Soundsystem außerdem noch einen Subwoofer spendiert. Das Ergebnis kann sich sehen lassen. Selten eignen sich die integrierten Speaker eines Notebooks für erstklassigen Musikgenuss bei dem man getrost auf externe Lautsprecher verzichten kann, beim HP Pavilion HDX ist dies jedoch eindeutig der Fall.
Was man dem sieben Kilo Brocken am wenigsten zutraut ist vermutlich eine passable Akkulaufzeit. Auch hier kann der Multimedia-Riese dank großem 83Wh Akku aber überraschen. Maximal erreichte das HDX9320EG eine Laufzeit von immerhin 205 Minuten (BatteryEater Readers Test). Selbst unter Last (Classic Test) schaffte das Notebook noch respektable 94 Minuten Akkulaufzeit. Im praxisnahen DVD Wiedergabebetrieb mit maximaler Helligkeit und maximalen Stromsparmaßnahmen erreichte das Gerät mit 120 Minuten ein brauchbares Ergebnis. Mit erreichten 165 Minuten bietet das Pavilion HDX auch im WLAN Betrieb bei angepasster Helligkeit und maximierten Stromsparfunktionen eine brauchbare Netzunabhängigkeit.

Das HP Pavilion HDX9320EG lieferte im Test eine Reihe von Punkten die zweifelsohne für das Notebook sprechen. So bietet etwa ein überaus sauber verarbeitetes und gleichzeitig stabiles Gehäuse eine solide Basis für das Notebook. Dabei wurde vor allem auf eine piekfeine Optik geachtet, die das Notebook im richtigen Licht funkeln lässt.
Dass eine großzügige Anschlussausstattung für ein Multimedianotebook Vorraussetzung ist, bleibt unbestritten. Aber HP gibt sich beim HDX nicht mit der Norm zufrieden und stattet das Notebook mit umfangreichen Optionen wie etwa HDMI, eSATA, Expansion Port und umfangreichen Audio Ausgängen aus und lässt damit die Konkurrenz vor Neid erblassen.
Selbst bei den Eingabegeräten lässt HP nichts anbrennen, wenn auch das Tippgefühl der Tastatur für verwöhne Business-Notebook-User etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig sein wird. Auch hier wird mit der integrierten und abnehmbaren Fernbedienung abermals die starke Gewichtung in Richtung Multimedia offenbar.
Ordentlich Punkte kassiert das Pavilion HDX auch beim Display. Dieses kann mit einer sehr guten Helligkeit bei guter Ausleuchtung und erstklassigem Kontrast überzeugen. Auch gebotenen Blickwinkel des leider stark spiegelnden Panels gehen in Ordnung.
Die Leistungsreserven des Notebooks können sich dank Penryn T8100 CPU von Intel und Geforce 8800M GTS Grafik von nVIDIA sehen lassen. Dennoch, für erhöhte Anforderungen im Anwendungsbereich sollte man zur ebenso verfügbaren und deutlich stärkeren T9300 CPU greifen. Die Geforce 8800M GTS Grafik bietet zwar auch im Gaming Bereich eine gute Leistung, bleibt aber dennoch deutlich hinter der 8800M GTX Grafik zurück, welche gerade für Gamer die erste Wahl darstellen sollte. Auch im CAD Bereich wird das HDX9320EG leistungstechnisch doch deutlich von Notebooks mit QuadroFX Grafik überholt.
Für das Pavilion HDX9320EG spricht dennoch ein erstklassiges Preis/Leistung Verhältnis, bedenkt man dass das Gerät bereits ab etwa 1500.- zu haben ist.
Erfreulich waren die überaus niedrigen Geräuschemissionen des Notebooks sowohl im Office Betrieb als auch unter Last. Das großzügige Gehäuse erlaubt offenbar eine ideale Durchlüftung der verbauten Komponenten. Dies spiegelt sich auch in einer überaus niedrigen Gehäusetemperatur wieder.
Überhaupt nicht zurückhaltend gibt sich das HDX 9320EG bei der Soundwiedergabe. Eine ganze Phalanx an Lautsprechern kombiniert mit einem Subwoofer sorgt für erstklassigen und absolut hörenswerten Sound.

استايل (CSS) چيست؟
- CSS مخفف کلمه Cascading Style Sheets ميباشند.
- اولين ورژن استايلها در سال ۱۹۹۶ ساخته شد. که اولين ورژن آن CSS1 بود.
- ديگر وژن آن CSS2 مي باشد که در سال ۱۹۹۸ ساخته شد که بيشتر براي ويرايش صفحات، نحوه نمايشها تگها و ... کاربرد دارد.
در سال هاي اوليه ايجاد شدن وب (سال هاي 89 و 90) هيچ کس تصور نمي کرد که اينترنت اينقدر گسترده شود. در اوايل صفحات وب صفحاتي کاملا ساده و عاري از هر گونه تصوير بود. با ورود اولين مرورگر بصري (مرورگر موزائيک) چهره وب تغيير کرد و با همه گير شدن اينترنت ، افراد به داشتن سايت علاقه نشان دادند و سعي کردند صفحات خود را به شکلي طراحي کنند که از صفحات ديگران متمايز باشد و از آنجايي که در HTML ، تگ ها زيادي براي صفحه آرايي متن و صفحه وجود نداشت، کاربران به سوء استفاده از دستورات HTML روي آوردند و از تگ هاي HTML در مکان غير تخصصي استفاده کردند. نتيجه آن شد که صفحات وب بسيار حجيم شدند و ساختار منطقي که در اوايل براي HTML در نظر گرفته شده بود، معناي خود را از دست بدهد. در ارائه CSS در سال 1996 و ارائه نسخه دوم CSS در سال 1998 ، دنياي جديدي به روي طراحان وب باز شد. حالا طراحان مي توانند با کمک CSS صفحاتي به مراتب سبکتر و از نظر بصري، صفحاتي جذاب تر را ايجاد کنند.
صفحاتي که با CSS طراحي شده است
1- حجم بسيار کمتري دارند
2- ساختار کاملا منطقي و ساخت يافته اي دارند
3- موتور هاي جستجو اين صفحات را بهتر index مي کنند
4- ويرايش قالب هاي CSS و ايجاد تغيير در آن ها بسيار ساده است.
ميتوان گفت که امروزه CSS طراحي صفحات وب را در جهان متحول کرده است. اين فناوري به طراحان وب کمک ميکند که طراحيهاي خود را با بالاترين کيفيت و کاربرپسندترين شکل ارائه کنند. پيش از اين، انجام اين کار تنها با فايلهاي سنگين گرافيکي قابل انجام بود.
به جرات ميتوان گفت که اگر شما بدانيد که با CSS چه کارهايي ميتوانيد بکنيد، قطعا از آن استفاده خواهيد نمود. امروزه اکثر قريب به اتفاق سايتهاي حرفهاي از CSS بهره ميبرند. بنابراين براي يک طراح صفحات وب يادگيري اين زبان بسيار مهم خواهد بود.
بسياري از طراحان وب در زمينهاي که در آن به فعاليت مشغول هستند (يعني طراحي) از اطلاعات ريشهاي و پايهاي برخوردار نيستند. اکثر آنها با خواندن يک کتاب در مورد HTML و يا JavaScript چيزهايي در مورد اين زبانها ميدانند. همچنين بسياري از آنها به نرمافزارهايي مانند Photoshop و Flash مسلط هستند. اما تعداد بسيار کمي هستند که تحصيلات دانشگاهي در اين زمينهها دارند. اما CSS براي هر دو گروه (چه آنهايي که تجربي و يا با خواندن يک کتاب طراحي را بلدند و چه آنهايي که به طور پايهاي به اين زبانها مسلط هستند) مفيد و شايد لازم است.
اما به راستي با CSS چه کاري ميشود کرد؟ به طور خلاصه ميتوان گفت مهمترين کار آن، راحتکردن شما از يک سري کد است که علاوه بر خستهکردن شما، باعث پايينآمدن سرعت لود صفحات شما ميشوند. CSS دست طراحان را به قدري باز گذاشته است که قطعا کسي با بهرهگيري از CSS تمايلي به استفاده از جداول نخواهد داشت.
CSS زماني کاربرد خود را نشان ميدهد که شما صفحهاي با حجم نسبتا زيادي از متن و عکس داريد (مانند يک وبلاگ) و نياز است که صفحه زود لود شود. اگر شما از جداول استفاده کنيد، بيننده بايد منتظر شود تا زماني که کل جدول لود شده و به نمايش درآيد. اما با استفاده از CSS، هرچقدر اطلاعات لود شده باشد، در همان لحظه بر روي مانيتور بيننده درج خواهد شد.
اما چرا CSS مانع از خستگي شما در کدنويسي ميشود؟ شما با CSS ميتوانيد ويژگيهاي يک بخش را فقط يکبار تعريف کنيد و ديگر مجبور نباشيد اين کار را تکرار کنيد. مثلا شما دوست داريد که متون داخل کادري که در همهي صفحات سايتتان وجود دارد، به رنگ قرمز باشد. براي اين کار بدون CSS شما لازم است هربار تگ font را نوشته و ويژگي color را ذکر کنيد. اما با CSS آنطور که بعدا خواهيد آموخت، تنها لازم است يکبار اين کار را انجام دهيد.
يادگيري CSS همانند HTML است؛ اما بايد بدانيد که براي يادگيري CSS لازم است که شما HTML را بلد باشيد.
CSS1 تعيين اولين شيوه نامه ، بيش از 50 خاصيت را تعريف مي كند ، و CSS2 بيش از 50 خاصيت ديگر را . CSS2 تسهيلات تغيير مكان كه CSS-P ناميده مي شود را به وجود آورده است . نگارش جديد كه CSS3 نام دارد قصد دارد امكانات ارائه بيشتري را به وجود آورد ، و با فناوري هاي ديگر ، نطير اسكريپت و گرافيك هاي برداري ، بيشتر يكپارچه شود .
تعيين الگو و style
هر style بايد براي يک تگ خاص تعريف شود . به محتواي داخل تگي که ميخواهيم يک style نسبت دهيم selector يا انتخاب کننده ميگويند که الگوي تعريف شده در تگ آغاز کننده يک عنصر تا تگ پايان دهنده آن تاثير خواهد داشت.

براي تعيين و تعريف يک الگو ابتدا بايد selector را مشخص و بنويسيم مانند h1 سپس خصوصيات(property) و مقادير(value) آنها را بين دو علامت { } بگذاريم که طرز نوشتن خصوصيت و مقدار آن بين { } به اين ترتيب ميباشد:

اختصاص دادن سبک ها به برچسب هاي HTML بسيار خوب است ولي چه اتفاقي خواهد افتاد اگر شما بخواهيد سبک ديگري را به دو برچسب همسان اختصاص دهيد ؟ در اين زمان برچسب هاي css وارد عمل مي شوند .
مثال : اين تعريف سبک باعث مي شود که تمامي متون پاراگراف هاي داخلي سند به رنگ آبي نمايش يابد :

اين نوع حالت از تغييرات تعريف شده بروي تمامي تگهاي پاراگراف اعمال خواهد شد که رنگ متن: قرمز، جهت متن: چپ، و اندازه فونت ۸ پوينت خواهد بود. توجه داشته باشيد در اين مثال سه حالت مختلف يک استايل را براي تگ پاراگراف تعريف کرديم که با استفاده از حالتهاي مختلف آن از هم جدا شدند.

۳. Linked or External style sheet: ارزش واقعي style sheet زماني به چشم ميايد که يکبار آنرا تعريف کنيد و در تمام صفحات از آن بهره ببريد. ، بدين ترتيب که style ها را در برنامه ويرايشگر متن مانند notepad مينويسيد و سپس آن فايل را با پسوند .css ذخيره کرده و در دايرکتوري اصلي وب سايتتان قرار ميدهيد. css مخفف Cascading Style Sheet است.
نکته: دراين روش نيازي به نوشتن تگهاي نيست و فقط selector ها و خصوصيات را مينويسيد. در صورت رعايت نکردن اين موضوع الگوهاي تعريف شده در آن فايل در صفحات اعمال نخواهند شد.
پس از ذخيره فايل style sheet ميتوانيد براي هر صفحه که ميخواهيد آنرا فراخواني کنيد، براي انجام اين عمل بايد تگ را در قسمت head قرار دهيد و سه خصوصيت مربوط به آنرا وارد کنيد. خصوصيت rel=” “ است که برابر با کلمه stylesheet قرار ميدهيد و سپس type=” " وبا text/css مقداردهي ميشود و در آخر با خصوصيت href=” “ فايل را آدرس دهي ميکنيد.

براي راحت بودن در کار مي توانيد ابتدا استايلها را به صورت Internal استفاده کرده و بعد از اينکه کارتان تمام شد کدهاي نوشته شده بين دو تگ (<style>style>) را در نت پد کپي کرده و آنرا با فرمت CSS دخيره کرده و سپس با استفاده از فرمول بالا آن فايل را به قالب لينک دهيد.
يکي از مزيتهاي اين نوع استايل اين ميباشد که مي توانيد با داشتن يک فايل استايل براي چندين صفحه استفاده کنيد و از ديگر مزيت هاي آن با اين کار کدهاي قالب را به چند فايل تقسيم کرده و قالب را منظم تر ميشود.
اغلب افراد برخي از اين مختصر نويسي ها را مي دانند اما عده کثيري از آن ناآگاهند. با اين راهکار، چندين مشخصه در يک خط خلاصه مي شود. بنابراين نه تنها مختصر نويسي صفت ها و عناصر CSS، موجب کاهش حجم فايل و بارگذاري زودتر آن مي شود، بلکه تا حد قابل ملاحظه ايي از شلوغي و نامرتبي فايل مي کاهد.چندين ويژگي براي مختصر نويسي موجود است. براي جزئيات بيشتر پيشنهاد مي کنم مشخصات W3C CSS را مطالعه کنيد.
در اولين مبحث به رنگ ها مي پردازيم. بهترين روش عمومي براي کاربرد رنگ در CSS استفاده از آن در مبناي شانزده (هگزادسيمال) بين 00 تا FF است، که قبل از آن نيز علامت پوند (#) مي آيد. هر رنگ 6 رقم طول دارد، دو رقم براي هر بايت.
دو رقم اول براي درجه رنگ قرمز، دو رقم دوم درجه رنگ سبز و و دو رقم آخر شدت رنگ آبي را نشان مي دهد. نکته اي که بيشتر افراد نمي دانند اين است که هر رنگ مبناي 16 از سه جفت تشکيل شده است، شما مي توانيد يک رقم از هر جفت رنگ امن را حذف کنيد. براي مثال مقدار 336699 با 369 برابر خواهد شد.
همان گونه که مي دانيد تنظيم يک رنگ امن به سادگي با انتخاب ترکيبي از مقدارهاي امن مبناي 16 انجام مي شود. در اين حالت FF9966 يک رنگ امن مبناي 16 است اما DB9370 اين چنين نيست، خوشبختانه اکثر ابزارهاي طراحي وب نظير dreamweaver ماکرومديا داراي سلکتور رنگ هاي امن هستند.
اگربخواهيم عرض و سبک و رنگ را به صورت تک تک به يک آبجکت نسبت دهيم بايد از فرمي مشابه زير استفاده کنيم:

در حالي که صفت border به طور مختصر مي تواند به شيوه زير به کار رود. فکر کنم تا اينجا متوجه شده باشيد که تا چه اندازه، مختصر نويسي مي تواند در کاهش کدها و مهمتر از آن کاهش سايز فايل موثر باشد.
يکي ديگر از مواردي که مي توانيد مختصر نويسي را در آن بکار بريد، پس زمينه يا به عبارتي همان background است.
بجاي آنکه از صفات تکي background-color براي رنگ پس زمينه، background-image براي تصوير پس زمينه، background-repeat براي تعيين اينکه آيا پس زمينه تکرار شود يا خير و چگونه تکرار شود، background-attachment براي تعيين اينکه آيا تصوير پس زمينه در طول سند حرکت کند يا در مکاني ثابت باشد و background-position براي اينکه وقتي تصوير پس زمينه اي تعيين شده باشد، اين صفت محل اوليه را نسبت به کادري که محتويات مولفه را در برگرفته است مشخص مي کند، استفاده کنيم، مي توانيم تمام اين صفات را به طور مختصر در صفت background بگنجانيم.

اين صفات تنها جزئي از اختصارات بود. موارد ديگري براي صفت هايي همچون font، list و outline موجود است که در حوصله اين مقاله نمي گنجد.
در پي تقاضاي مجله «ويچ کامپيوتر»، يک بيولوژيست به وسيله ميکروسکوپهاي الکترونيکي، کيبوردهاي يک شرکت عمده را مورد آزمايش قرار داده و نتايج شگفتآور آن را در اختيار اين مجله قرار داده است.
در اين بررسي، پنج کيبورد مورد آزمايش شده از ميان کيبوردهاي يک شرکت صاحب نام انگليسي، ۱۵۰ برابر ميزان قابل قبول موجودات مضر براي سلامتي انسان در محيط کار را نشان داده و حاكي از آن است كه وجود موجودات ميکروسوپي مضر بر بقيه کيبوردها، پنج برابر سنگ توالتهاست.
بر پايه تحقيقات انجام شده، اصليترين علت وجود ميکروبها و باکتريها، تميز نكردن کيبوردها از يك سو و تماس هميشگي دکمهها با انگشتان آلوده کاربران، از سوي ديگر است.
در اين زمينه، بيولوژيستها و مسئولان بهداشتي، دو عامل اصلي را در انتقال و رشد ميکروبها و باکتريها روي کيبوردها ذکر ميکنند:
يکي از عوامل اصلي، انتقال ميکروبها و باکتريهاي انگشتان آلوده کاربران است. در حالت عادي، افراد در مدت يک ساعت، بارها دست خود را به دهان و بيني ميبرند و ميکروبهاي موجود در اين نواحي را با زدن کيبورد به دکمههاي آن منتقل ميکنند. از سوي ديگر، افراد پس از بيرون آمدن از توالت با دستهاي آلوده، ميکروبهاي موجود بر دستها را به کيبورد منتقل ميکنند؛ اين موضوع بيشتر درباره افرادي صادق است که پس از بيرون آمدن از توالت، دستهاي خود را نميشويند.
دومين عامل رشد ميکروبها روي کيبوردها، تغذيه به هنگام کار كردن است، چرا که ريزههاي غذايي که روي دکمهها و شيارهاي کيبورد و اطراف آن به جاي ميماند، لانه مساعدي براي توليد و تکثير آنهاست.
يکي از بيولوژيستهاي فرانسوي در اين باره ميگويد: تغذيه به هنگام کار با کيبورد و با دستهاي نشسته، مثل اين است که فرد در توالت غذاي خود را صرف کند و حتي بدتر.
در يک نظرسنجي در همين زمينه، بيش از ۱۰ درصد کاربران کامپيوتر، هرگزتوصيه مسئولان بهداشتي به عنوان پيشگيري از ابتلا به ميکروبهاي کيبوردي، شستن دستها با صابون پس از کار کردن با اين وسيله و پيش از غذا و پرهيز از خوردن در هنگام كار و نظافت کيبوردها در فواصل کوتاه با اسپريهاي مخصوص است .

Upside Down
Although convertible notebooks like the Dell Latitude XT, which support being operated either as tablet PC or as standard notebook are still rare, they gain more and more market share, because of new technologies and increasing possible field of application. The Dell Latitude XT demonstrates how a good convertible PC should be.
The XT belongs to the Latitude notebooks, so, which is Dell's business line. You can expect a good workmanship and a robust and durable case and furthermore, comprehensive business support. And right so, because the price of business notebooks is clearly higher than of similarly equipped consumer notebooks.
The price of the reviewed notebook is clearly above 2500.- Euro, which is quite high, even for a convertible notebook. So, our expectations in the Dell XT were high. Dell uses aluminium and magnesium, which make light cases possible. The roughened aluminium parts on the one hand contribute to a well stable case, and on the other hand they look first-class and feel nice to the touch.
However, consider that the look is still business-like. Case and keyboard are black, except of two thin silver mouldings on the display. Further colour accents are missing. The look is dominated by the used materials and the compact design with slightly bevelled edge, which make working even in tablet mode user-friendly. Small colour accents are the blue illuminated power switch on the display and the blue track point in the middle of the keyboard.
Of course a stable case is crucial for a very mobile convertible notebook, because it is especially designed for being carried around with only one hand, if it is closed. As already mentioned above the Dell Latitude XT is brilliant in terms of case stability. If you pick this 1690 gramme notebook up at the front edge, you'll neither see any deformations nor hear any creaking noises.
If you apply force to single parts, you'll find out that the part above the battery slightly yields under pressure, however, this is not crucial in practice. Base unit and display, which is also reinforced by aluminium, are very flexural rigid. The pressure resistance of the display is also good, the applied force does not exceed a reasonable level.
Typically convertible, the base of the XT attaches to the display at a single central joint called a swivel hinge or rotating hinge. The joint allows the screen to rotate around 180° and fold down on top of the keyboard. You can switch between display mode and regular notebook within one to two seconds.
Although this complicated hinge does not appear to be very stable, and allows a clear see-saw after adjusting the position when used as regular notebook, the mechanism supports an easy and quick transformation from regular notebook to tablet PC. However, there is neither a transport hook if used as tablet PC nor if used as regular laptop. Although plastic knobs help keeping the notebook closed, an unintentional moving or even opening of the display is still possible.
Because a convertible supports two modes, i.e. regular notebook and folded as tablet, it is difficult to reasonably locate the provided ports. A button located below the display which enables rotating the displayed picture in 90° steps eases it, because the Latitude XT supports user-friendly work in each position. E.g., the audio and USB ports, which might also be used in tablet mode can be moved to the side where they are needed in this way.
If used as regular notebook the following interfaces are available: The front edge is free of any ports. A slot for the stylus, a Firewire port, an USB port and a vent holes for the system fan, and a speaker are at the left side.
At the back side there are the power connector, an analogue VGA port which enables connecting an external screen or beamer, a LAN port, and a powered USB port, which is designed as standard USB port with extra power socket directly above it and makes it possible to separately power external devices like, e.g., an optical drive.
A hardware WLAN switch and a hot key called 'WiFi-Catcher', which makes quickly searching for available wireless networks easy, a further USB port, an Expresscard slot, and a SD Cardreader, microphone, and headphones port, and a Kensington lock are at the right side.
So, the interface equipment is good and typical for 12 inch subnotebooks. If you turn the XT upside down, you'll also find the docking port and a number of holes at the bottom side. You can dock to an optionally available docking station, called MediaBase by Dell, which extends over the entire bottom side. It provides according to Dell three further ports, VGA, and DVI port, a serial port and a built-in optical DVD +/- RW drive and is offered for 250.- Euro in Dell 's on-line shop.
In terms of data communication the Dell Latitude XT Convertible offers a number of possibilities. These are, e.g., a Gigabit network adapter by Broadcom and a WLAN module by Dell, which optionally supports either standard 802.11a/g or 802.11a/g/n. The reviewed notebook supported furthermore WLAN via Intel Wireless WiFi 4965 AGN module. Although the reviewed Dell XT did not support Bluetooth, it is optionally available for the Dell XT. Furthermore, the reviewed notebook did not include a standard 56k modem.
Another option is a built-in 3G/HSDPA card which enables connecting to the Internet from any location provided the reception is sufficient. According to relevant information, this wireless module can be only activated by a contract with Vodafone. However, it should be possible to use other service providers by installing a different driver.
A fingerprint reader, located at the right bottom edge of the display and therewith also accessible in tablet mode, and an integrated TPM 1.2 (Trusted Platform Module) contribute to data security.
Not much accessories were provided together with the test sample. Except of the notebook itself, we found a very thin 45W power adapt. The power cable has a standard Dell plug, whereas a thin plug would at least better match the look. A recovery DVD was also included.
The most important part of a tablet PCs is surely the display, which should support a user-friendly work even without keyboard. But, a convertible, like the Latitude is also equipped with a standard keyboard, which we focus on in the following paragraphs.
The keyboard ideally utilizes the available width of this 12 inch notebook. The key size of 17mm x 18mm of the standard keys is comfortable. The enter key does even extent over two rows, and also the Shift, Tab, Alt, Crtl keys are slightly bigger. The F-keys in the top row are slightly smaller, and are only 15mm x 12 mm.
A standard keyboard layout is used, so, touch typing is easy from the very beginning. The key feedback is clear and therewith a little bit jerky. The typing noise is quiet. Overall, the keyboard proved to be user-friendly.
Touch pad and track point are available mouse replacements. The touch pad is nearly at the same level than the surrounding case and has a surface with comfortable gliding properties. Response and precision of the touch pad are also alright. Both of the touch pad's buttons are, due to a well recognizable travel and low nosie emissions, user-friendly.
The track point designed as blue plastic stick in the middle of the keyboard is not that precise than, e.g., the one of Lenovo Thinkpads. Futhermore, its sharp-edged surface does not fell nice to the touch. However, the biggest disadvantage is that its button are low in the case and very small, so, the thumb sometimes touches the case and the buttons do not react.
Let's focus on the primary input device of the Dell Latitude XT, its display. This convertible by Dell comes with a N-trig panel, which support input by stylus and by bare finger (capacitive touch). Because the stylus does not require batteries, it is especially small and light. Furthermore, the stylus has two keys which replace the right respectively the left mouse button or activate the erase option. Unfortunately the location of the buttons is not ideal and handling them is cumbersome, whereas some time is needed to get used to them.
Another nice feature of this touch display is its 'palm rejection' feature, which avoids erroneous input by the entire resting hand. The touch display thereby reacts only to the top of the stylus, although, e.g., both hands rest on the display. This improves the user-friendliness of drawing and adumbrating.
This panel could totally convince regarding user-friendliness. Its stylus enables a quick and precise input. A good calibration of the test sample contributed to this. The top of the stylus was nearly absolutely precisely recognized on the entire display. But, there are slight problems especially near the margins, if the stylus is hold at an angle to the display. There the recognized stylus position can deviate about 1 millimetre from the actual position. However, calibrating the display and the stylus again helped.
We enjoyed that it is possible to control the Latitude XT by sole finger, which is also user-friendly and quick. Even standard applications like, e.g., browsing the Internet, can be used without problems in tablet mode.
The Windows Vista Business Tablet PC input field convinced at all. This small Window, which is minimized at the left margin becomes a touch keyboard, if activated by a fingertip or opens text input field, if clicked by the stylus. It makes entering text even without standard keyboard user-friendly. Even very personal handwriting is either recognized at once or can be quickly rectified. The input also supports different line thickness depending on the force with which the stylus is pressed against the display.
A number of buttons at the edge of the display further improve input in tablet mode. The 'back' button proved to be handy when browsing the Internet and also the hot key for launching the standard e-mail program was very convenient. If you press the button with the tool icon, a menu opens which allows to configure not only tablet specific settings, but also a number of other settings. It allows to, e.g., calibrate the stylus and select the input mode of the display (stylus, finger, or both).
The reviewed Dell Latitude XT was equipped with the 12.1 inch LED version of the display. Dell also offers a standard LCD with a maximum brightness of up to 400 cd/m² (according to Dell) as an alternative to the reviewed display, which has a lower power consumption. Especially outdoors, if the environment is very bright, the standard LCD panel would be possible preferable because of a better contrast.
The brightness of the LED WXGA display with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels proved to be good in our review. The maximum measured brightness was 244 cd/m², which is good. Overall, the brightness is good, whereas the average brightness is 230 cd/m² and the illumination of 89.8% is good.

A black value of 0.39 cd/m² gives together with the maximum brightness a contrast ratio of 562:1, which is also good. However, not only the measurements convinced, but also the subjective appearance of the displayed pictures. The colour representation of the display is passable and the pictures look really good. In terms of picture quality you won't recognize that this is touch panel at the first glance.
Although the LCD version of the Dell Latitude XT is advertised as outdoor version, also the LED panel in passable in this aspect. Although the display could be brighter, if the environment is very bright (tested with snow and sunshine), the display stays legible. Despite a matte display, reflections could not completely avoided outdoors.
Marginal improvements would be possible regarding dependence on the viewing angles. While the display has horizontally a big area of operation if used as regular notebook, you'll vertically quickly face a darkening, if you look from bottom up. To our surprise, the vertical viewing angles from top down are good.
In tablet mode you'll need to adjust the viewing angles time and again in order to work with a constantly good picture quality.
Looking at the hardware equipment, it gets obvious at once, that the main focus was maximizing battery runtime. The central processing unit is an Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 CPU with 1.2 GHz, which is one of the ULV processors, optimized for low power demand and therewith contributing to a long battery life.
In addition the Latitude XT is equipped with an ATI Radeon XPress 1250 graphics chip, which is about equally powerful than an integrated GMA X3100 video chip by Intel, but is equipped with dedicated video memory and can utilize up to 384MB respectively up to 896MB of RAM (if 1GB respectively 2GB RAM total RAM capacity is available).
The 3DMark and PCMark benchmark are, therefore, as expected worse than those of notebooks with more powerful processors and partly also worse than those with more powerful graphics cards. But, they are clearly better than those of similarly equipped notebooks with ULV CPU and integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics card.
Furthermore, the Latitude XT is equipped with 1GB fixed RAM and provides one free RAM slot. So, it supports a total of 3GB RAM. The RAM slot was occupied by a 2048MB DDR2 PC5300 RAM in the reviewed notebook, so, it can't be further upgraded.
The hard disk is a 1.8 inch PATA 120GB hard disk by Samsung (HS122JC) with a revolution speed of 5400 rpm. Other possible choices are a 40GB hard disk or a 64GB SSD. The measured transfer rate of the 120GB hard disk was slightly below-average and the access time of 21.4 milliseconds is slightly slower than of standard 2.5 inch 5400 rpm notebook hard disks.
In practice the reviewed bundle proved to provide a passable performance. Working with office and Internet applications is even under Windows Vista with Aero surface smooth. However, the limited performance of the ULV CPU gets soon obvious, if CPU demanding applications, e.g., compressing and decompressing data, are executed. Obviously, the CPU is also the bottle neck in terms of performance.

Loudness
In practice the fan stayed deactivated in idle mode, if the energy saving profile was used. So, only the silent rustling of the hard disk was audible. We measured a noise level 30.5 dB(A), which proves this. Unfortunately, this value does not tell much about the expected noise level in practice. Even if you just perform simple tasks, e.g. entering text or browsing the Internet, the fan starts running at once and the noise level increases to 34.8 dB(A), which is clearly audible, but not necessarily annoying.
Under full load the Latitude XT reached a permanent noise level of 37.0 dB(A), which is still alright.

Temperature
The surface temperature of the Dell XT was also alright under load. We measured a maximum of 34.2 °C on the top side and of 38.2 °C on the bottom side. Both values are alright, and working stays always comfortable.

Speakers
The Dell XT has an integrated speaker at the left side of the case. Although it sounds dull, its sound stays even at passable maximum volume clear, i.e. without disturbing noise.
The sound output via 3.5mm stereo port was also good. To our surprise, we could recognize clear basses, when we checked it together with a Sennheiser PC131 headset.
The reviewed Dell Latitude XT was equipped with a 6 cells 42 Wh (3780 Ah) lithium ions battery, which is located at the bottom side of the notebook. Alternatively also a 4 cells battery is available. The 1.8 inch hard disk is located centred to the battery. The maximum runtime measured by the BatteryEater Readers test was 225 minutes whereas we used the energy saving profile, deactivated WLAN and dimmed the brightness of the display. Under load (BatteryEater Classic test) the runtime was only 75 minutes.
In practice, with WLAN and adapted brightness (level 6/7) and with the Windows performance profile 'energy saving mode' the runtime was 195 minutes, which is good.
If your demands on mobility and working indepent of power supply are bigger, you can equip the Dell XT with a supplement battery, which has to be docked at the bottom side of the notebook, which it entirely covers. The supplement battery increases the height of the notebook by 8.5mm and increases the total weight by 590 gramme (according to Dell). The additional capacity of 45 Wh is expected to about double the runtime compared to the standard battery. Dell specifies a runtime of 9.5 hours, but, this seems to be unlikely in practice. The supplement battery costs 218.- Euro at the time of writing.

Although the number of tablet PCs or convertibles we reviewed recently is not yet big (Lenovo Thinkpad X61T, Toshiba Portégé R400, M400, Asus R1F), the Dell Latitude XT could in general convince and has the potential to make using a tablet PC attractive for former notebook users. The touch display allows input via bare finger and via provided stylus.
After some practice, you can very quickly control standard applications without mouse. Furthermore, you can enjoy the advantage of the compact size of a tablet and therewith higher mobility and the fast input of handwritten notes and drawings, which is not possible with a regular notebook.
The highlight of the Dell Latitude XT convertible is without doubt its LED touch display with very good calibration and, furthermore, good brightness and illumination. It allows outdoor operation as well as the use as regular notebook display with very good picture representation. However, the viewing angles could be better for tablet mode, but otherwise this display is nearly flawless.
The performance focuses on good office and Internet performance whereas low energy demand was considered especially important. Overall, the performance is sufficient for running Windows Vista smoothly. However, the used ULV CPU by Intel with 1.2 GHz is the bottleneck in this aspect.
If the operation noise had been nearly absolutely quite, this would have been wonderful. However, in practice the fan starts to run, even if the load is low. Nonetheless, the noise level stays alright all the time. In return, the surfaces to not get noticeably warmer.
The battery runtime of the main battery is depending on the workload moderate to useful. Optionally, you can attach a supplement battery at the bottom of the notebook.

Due to the compact construction of notebooks they can not be upgraded as easy as Desktop PCs. In addition usually the warranty is lost as soon as someone changes something in the equipment.
Processor
Can be upgraded sometimes, but usually only up to speeds, which were sold in other models of the type. The reason is the cooling of laptops which is coordinated very precisely with the used processors.
RAM
RAM usually can be changed or extended easily, because most manufacturers insert the modules under an easily accessible opening. Normally the modules are standardized and can be exchanged by putting them in simply.
Hard Disk
Usually 2.5" drive assemblies are used, which can be exchanged without problems in most cases. Nevertheless problems can arise with the Bios or the Jumpering (master - slave).
WLAN
Frequently mini PCI-modules are used for internal WLAN, which can be relatively simply exchanged. Unfortunately some manufacturers do insert non-authorized modules, or the antenna socket is in another place and therefore the antenna can not be attached.
Optical Drive Assemblies
Can be exchanged usually relative simply, however many manufacturers use own specific cover plates with the provided models. Therefore sometimes the new drive assembly cannot fit well optically.
Video Card
Many manufacturers promise exchangeable modules with the new PCI-express-standard. The question is how to get other suitable video cards, which fit and are provided with a corresponding cooling system. Up to now it is very rarely possible to exchange the grafics card in a notebook. Usually they are soldered firmly (up to now except of Dell with some models).
Other
The remaining components can hardly be upgraded, except the manufacturers supply corresponding parts or plan it.

The Dell Latitude d420 is the smallest laptop offered from Dell. It features a 12.1 inch screen and is an upgraded version of the Dell Latitude d410. If you are looking strictly to purchase a Dell laptop, you might want to compare the Latitude d420 and the Dell XPS m1210. Overall, the XPS m1210 is more designed for gamers while the Latitude d420 was designed to suit business needs. Everything about the Dell d420 is perfect for the on the go frequent flyer. It's incredibly thin and weighs an incredible 3 lbs. or so depending on what kind of battery that you get. If you need the extra battery life, you will have to sacrifice about a half of a pound in overall weight because the nine cell battery is a little heavier than the six cell battery. One of the coolest things about the Dell Latitude d420 is the media base.

If you travel light and don't plan on using an optical drive while on the move, we may have found the ultimate business notebook PC for you – the Dell Latitude D420. Looking for an ultra-portable notebook PC that'll withstand the rigours of travel? Well, there are loads of examples in the market but few are as compelling as the Latitude D420. The D420 also features Dell's Strike Zone technology, which protects the hard drive by isolating it from external vibrations and gently cushioning it in the event of a fall. The Dell Latitude D420 ends up as an almost-ideal business notebook PC. It's a fact that CD-Rs and DVD-Rs have become a very cheap and disposable way to pass large amounts of data around (especially if you're in publishing, advertising, engineering – almost any industry that deals with digital media, actually). Having to lug around an external drive isn't quite acceptable these days. It only gives Latitude D420 owners another peripheral to pack and (potentially) misplace.

Dell Latitude D420 with Core Duo and Windows Vista Review

I recently acquired a DELL LATITUDE D420 laptop as a lightweight "spare" and complement to my larger, high-powered DELL XPS M1710 laptop. (See my M1710 review in my sig.) The D420 weighs 3+ lbs, has a 12.1" screen, and is considered an ultralight, as compared to the 8.8 lbs, 17" screen, desktop replacement M1710. It has already been perfect for chair-side, sofa, or bed while checking email, surfing the 'Net, reading books, or playing online Sudoku, which is all I want it for and all I expect it to do. After a year in production the M1710 is still a top-notch, do-it-all, high performance laptop, but it gets a bit lap-heavy during a long evening, and taking to bed for a final round of Sudoku or to read myself to sleep is out of the question.

The Dell Latitude D420 is the smallest notebook currently offered by Dell. It is a fusion of the discontinued Dell Latitude D410 and X1. It combines notable traits from both and offers great portability, power and versatility. The Dell Latitude D420 is a great notebook for those who want an ultraportable design without sacrificing computing power. The build quality of this notebook is excellent and the price very competitive. Despite some design flaws, notably the location of the vent and the useless brightness sensor, this notebook excels in its primary function as a business ultraportable. Compared to its predecessor the Dell Latitude X1, the D420 is a great upgrade that will be all ready to handle the demands of newer software and Windows Vista.

The Dell D420 looks like a lighter slimmer laptop but some ultraportables have a more unusual look. Portable PCs are meant to be portable. An 18" widescreen notebook makes an excellent entertainment PC or a mobile workstation for video editing, but you'll need a wheeled case to drag it around in. What happens when you cross the Dell Latitude X1 with the Latitude D410? You get Dell's next-generation ultraportable: the Latitude D420 ($2,271 direct). The D420 combines the feathery lightness of the X1's chassis with the corporate feel of the D410. It's a laptop built for cross-country trekkers, so it doesn't hurt to have integrated EV-DO and over 6 hours of battery life to go along with it. When the Latitude X1 was first introduced, it didn't resemble any of the other models in the Latitude line. In fact, it was a rebranded Samsung laptop that was incompatible with the Latitude line's peripherals, including the docking solution. With the new and improved D420, Dell has solved this problem, reconfiguring the X1's magnesium-alloy frame into the familiar Latitude form. Back in May I reviewed the Dell Latitude D620 and was very impressed. With the D620 Dell had produced a well built and feature rich business notebook with an attractive design and good ergonomics. I was therefore keen to take a look at the Latitude D420, which represents Dell's latest ultra-portable business offering. Dell's new Latitude range just goes from strength to strength. The D620 was a great notebook at a very attractive price, and this D420 continues that trend. Not only is the D420 well built, stylish, small and light, but it's also feature rich. The inclusion of the integrated HSDPA module is just icing on the cake and makes this the ideal notebook for the road warrior who needs to always be connected.

Dell doesn't seem to be able to do much wrong with the new line of Latitude notebooks. The D620 arrived and flew straight to the top of the A List, and it's a similar story for the D420 - the baby of the Latitude family. Dell is currently tight-lipped about plans to replace the minuscule X1, but with the D420 weighing just 1.5kg with its six-cell battery there's little reason to look any further for a business ultraportable. It's powered by Intel's U2500, a Core Duo CPU with a speed of 1.2GHz. If that doesn't sound terribly impressive, the TDP (thermal design power, the maximum amount of power the CPU can draw) of merely 9W certainly does. Small but perfectly formed, the D420 has hours of battery life and can be connected to the internet almost anywhere.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an onboard integrated video chip and can be called a faster clocked GMA 900 (on Mobile Intel 945GM Express chipset, which is available only starting with Core Duo/Solo). 2006 it is the most often used graphics solution and is classified in the weakest third of mobile graphics solutions. So it can only be used for elder games. For office applications and surfing it is without any doubt sufficient.

Intel Core Solo: Intel Core Solo is a successor of the Pentium M and a single core version of the Core Duo with less current consumption than the Pentium M (maximum 27 Watts). The performance is slightly better than with an equally clocked Pentium M. These processors also are apt for subnotebooks due to the low current consumption.

Striking a good balance between style, performance, and battery life, the Dell Inspiron 1720 is an impressive desktop replacement. The Dell Inspiron 1720--the bigger brother of the of the Dell Inspiron 1520--is a desktop replacement that shares many of the same features we liked in its sibling: a choice of colors, a speedy Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 802.11n Wi-Fi, discrete graphics, and 3GB of free online backup. We just wish it were a bit lighter. This 17-inch sports rounded edges and a choice of eight colors: Jet Black, Alpine White, Espresso Brown, Ruby Red, Midnight Blue, Spring Green, Flamingo Pink, and Sunshine Yellow. We loved the look and feel of our soft-touch Ruby Red model but were disappointed once we lifted the lid; the interior is bland by comparison. When outfitted with the beefy nine-cell battery, this notebook weighs nine pounds and measures 15.5 x 11.5 x 1.7 inches. In other words, the Inspiron 1720 wasn't made for travel, and when you add the AC adapter to the mix, you're talking about ten pounds.

Dell has recently refreshed its popular Inspiron range of notebooks to enable the product line to take advantage of the latest mobile technologies. The desktop-replacement Inspiron 1720 (4.30kg) is one of the latest members of the family offering a well-balanced blend of performance and features. And in a surprising move for Dell, you can also order it in one of eight different colours. At the heart of our review model Inspiron 1720 is an Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 processor, running at 1.8GHz with an 800MHz FSB speed and 2MB of L2 cache. There are limited options on the processor, but you could go from a 1.66GHz Core 2 Duo T5450 up to a Core 2 Duo T7700 clocked at 2.4GHz with 4MB of L2 cache. Instead of the standard 1GB of PC2-5300 667MHz memory, Dell supplied the unit with 2GB of memory (an additional cost of £111.62), while the notebook will support up to 4GB of memory in total.

Dell Inspiron 1720 Review

The Dell Inspiron 1720 is a 17" desktop replacement targeted towards younger consumers, most of whom are in school. This notebook competes against such notebooks as the HP dv9500t and Toshiba P200/P205. The 1720 offers a wide range of hardware configurations, as well as 8 different color options to be customized exactly as you want it. Processors range from the T5250 all the way up to the T7700, RAM from 1GB to 4GB, HD from 120GB to 500GB (250GB x 2), display resolutions starting at WXGA+ up to WUXGA, and color ranging from jet black to sunshine yellow.
This Dell 17" laptop is a great performer and extremely well built laptop structurally. It seems to be built well enough to be thrown around in day to day use, and hold up throughout an entire college career. It will roll with the punches, and probably hurt your fist in the process. The only problems I found which don’t relate directly to the function of the laptop are the peeling paint, which should hopefully be worked out as production goes on in the upcoming months.

Dell has hit refresh on its Inspiron range of notebooks and added the desktop replacement 1720, using the latest Intel Santa Rosa technology. This addition is one in a line of constant improvements to the Inspiron range, which appeals to both business and home users. With the 1720, Dell has caught the coloured notebook bug. The chassis may be the normal silver colour, but you can now personalise the lid with a choice of eight colours - a matt black called Jet Black, and six microsatin finishes, Midnight Blue, Bubblegum Pink, Spring Green, Ruby Red, Sunshine Yellow and Espresso Brown. Yes, really. A gloss white finish is also available, but you may have to wait up to 20 days longer before you can get hold of your Mac look-a-likey. Dell's Inspiron 1720 is well put together and, given its price, has an impressive feature list.

Dell hasn’t refreshed its consumer notebook line for close to two years, so the introduction of the 1720 is something of a welcome surprise. There are two models in the new line with this being the larger version with a 17-inch Super-TFT panel – the smaller 1520 comes with 15-inch screen but offers the same design and specification. The first thing you will notice is how sturdy it is, as Dell has learnt its lesson with the previous generation of Inspiron and opted to use thicker plastic for the main body and behind the lid. Under the lid, you’ll still find the same silver colouring but Dell has decided that consumers like colour so has made eight different coloured lids available. They claim they’ll bring out colour co-ordinated peripherals to match but details are a little thin on the ground.

The Dell Inspiron 1720 is a desktop-replacement laptop that will doubtless have much success infiltrating family rooms and cramped office spaces. It will also attract specific buyers, thanks in large part to the embedded EV-DO Rev A modem that's unique for a 17-inch laptop. Average buyers will love the performance, color selections, and features such as the webcam and huge storage capacities.

Depending on the used graphic memory and the clock speed, the performance is between the 7600 GT and 7900 GS video card. Gamers, who every time expect supreme frame rates, should wait for the 8800 series of NVidia.
Just as the performance class 1 these cards are comparable with video cards for desktop computers with the same name. The newest games should run with some reduced details fluently (in moderate resolutions).

Intel Core Duo: Intel Core Duo (successor of Pentium M), is a double core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used common. The maximum current consumption of 31 Watts is only 4 W more then with Pentium M. Due to the low energy need is Core Duo also suited for subnotebooks. Further now it supports SSE3 orders. The performance can nearly be doubled for applications, which were designed for multiprocessors (compared with Pentium M).
T2400: T2400 is a Core Duo of medium speed and apt for office applications and surfing.

Dell's Latitude D430 is the successor to the company's excellent Latitude D420, which has been sitting proudly atop the A List since issue 144 (92149). There isn't much change to see on the outside, as the D430 looks exactly like its predecessor; in many ways, that's a good thing since this remains a high-quality chassis, but it does result in a few compromises. Chief among these is the lack of an optical drive. Considering the D430 weighs 1.5kg, and Sony manages to pack an optical drive into the 1.13kg VAIO VGN-G11XN (web ID: 107284), this is disappointing. Instead, there's a MediaBase (included in the price here; use E-Value code: MAG-430PCP) that clips to the bottom of the notebook and gives you a DVD-RW drive, DVI and VGA outputs, and acts as a port replicator. You can carry the notebook around with the MediaBase attached, but it increases the weight to 2.1kg.

It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).
Only older games can be played fluently with these graphics chips (if they were not too demanding). Shared memory graphic cores in this category got the advantage of less heat production and longer battery runtimes. Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more current consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Cure 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower tensions (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

The advantage is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the tiny display has the advantage, that it needs few current, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is very exhausting vor the eyes. High resolutions can hardly be used.

1.4 kg: This subnotebook is one of the most lightweight of all notebooks and can be carried very easily. There exist only few sub-notebooks, which weight less. 10 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
Dell: Dell is one of the biggest international manufacturers according market shares and the number of notebook models, which are reviewed in German and English speaking countries. Some of these reviewed laptops achieve top positions according total rating and price/value relation.

HP dv6598eg (Pavilion dv6000)
All-Rounder. Time and again various manufactures produce really interesting notebooks. The Pavilion dv6598eg by HP should be one of them. The smart design, which also won a design award, covers a Geforce 8400M GS video card, which is just fit for gaming, a T7300 CPU, 2 GB main memory, and a big 200GB hard disk. Is there anything more to be desired? Maybe watching TV? - No problem a DVB-T tuner is also provided.
Note: The HP Pavilion dv6500 series is configured for each retailer according to his demands. The notebooks differ from each other mostly by different CPUs, main memory, and accessories. Named dv6595eg, a version very similar to the reviewed notebook is offered by Mediamarkt and Saturn. The low price (999.- recommended subject price) is only possible because of a less powerful CPU and a smaller hard disk and because the DVB-T is missing.
After opening the display cover, you'll see the label tagged to the left palm rest area at the first glance. It labels the Pavilion dv6598eg as "reddot design award" winner, and hints on the new HP "imprint finish". This is a novel finish of the display cover and the hand ball supports of the notebook.
These are circular ornaments which nearly look like flowers. Covered by a glossy lacquer they decorate the notebook. Indeed, this design really looks good. It's decent, but, still attracts attention.
Not only the look of its surface, the total workmanship of the case can convince. The Pavilion dv6598eg is designed in the HP way, with round forms and high gloss materials, still, it is elegant. Obviously, the engagement of serious and competent designers was worth it.
But now to the facts. The robustness of the case is as good as its look. It's well resistant against applied forces and flexural rigid. The same is also true for the display.
The hinges allow a slight see-saw after adapting the display's position. Otherwise they keep the display well in its position. However, the opening angle is limited to about 130°. This might limit the mobile use of the notebook.
Furthermore, a transport hook is missing. Alike many other up-to-date notebooks, also the dv6598eg misses, for the benefit of a nicer look, this safeguard out. Be this as it may, this notebook might look too beautiful for a mobile use anyway, because scratches would decrease the good look…
Mainly the provided ports are at the left side of the case: There are a Firewire, a total of 3 USB ports, a HDMI, and an Expansion port. Notebooks belonging this class do not usually provide these, so, they make the dv6598eg a wonder of multimedia.
The keyboard is located in a separated region, which fits well to the design of rest of the case by rounded edges. So, the keys in the corners had to be rounded too. This looks good, and did not have any impact on user-friendliness.
The layout is rather dense, still all the keys have a sufficient size. Typing is alright too. The travel of the keys is adequate, the point of pressure clear, and the pressure resistance not too high. Overall, typing is user-friendly, but maybe a little rough and somewhat loud when typing forcefully.
HP also had a special idea regarding hot keys. Under a small black molding above the keyboard, blue lighted icons gleam. They react very sensible even to the lightest touch. They can be used for controlling the Mediaplayer and for volume control.
The touch pad is similarly designed in order to fit to the Pavilion's total appearance. Its buttons are user-friendly, and the touch pad can easily be deactivated by a button located above it. However, the pad's surface is very sticky and slows the navigating finger down too much.
The HP Pavilion dv6598eg is equipped with a 1280x800 WXGA display, the most frequently used laptop display nowadays. Depending on the users taste and work habits, the overview provided by this resolution might be too low.
The display is sufficiently bright, subjectively the colors are somewhat dull, although the display has a glossy surface.
Because we were provided with the reviewed notebook only for a short time, we could not actually measure brightness and contrast.
Outdoors the display reflect heavily. Also the brightness could be better. So, the maximum brightness can be estimated to about 150 cd/m² or slightly above.
Regarding stability to the vantage point the areas of operation are sufficiently big. However, at acuter angles you'll soon observe changes. Horizontally, you'll face a loss of contrast and heavy reflexions, vertically, the usual darkening or whitening.
The HP Pavilion dv6598eg is equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7300 with 2.0 GHz and a Geforce 8400M GS video card and is a beginner's multimedia notebook.
Depending on the planned usage, the performance of the notebook ranges from "well equipped" to "a little bit limited".
The former is true for ordinary office, internet and mail applications, but also for DVD playback and music. This is ensured by the provided DVB-T tuner including remote control, aerial, and various accessories. Additionally these applications are supported by a big 200GB hard disk (5400 U/min) with slightly above average access times, and a total of 2GB main memory which also contributes to a quickly responding Windows desktop.
Another field of operation is of course computer games. Here the video card is most important. The Geforce 8400M GS by NVIDIA is on the one hand just playable, which is also proved by the benchmark tests, but the resolution and the number of details sometimes have to be clearly reduced in order to ensure acceptable display refresh rates.
Overall, the dv6598eg' s performance is good and user-friendly. However, gamer should rather attune to a Geforce 8600M GS as minimum equipment in order to ensure real gaming fun. For those who only occasionally play games, the Geforce 8400M GS, as provided in this notebook, should be sufficient.

Loudness
Short after turning the computer on, we were surprised, because the fan started to run immediately. So, we looked into the Windows settings and noticed that the performance profile "balanced" was selected.
So, we changed the performance setting to "energy saving" and the fan stopped running at once. With this setting, you can nearly noiselessly type and browse the Internet. Only sometimes, the fan interrupts the silence for some seconds.
If you concentrate on the fan's noise, you'll notice a hardly audible sough, which annoys…
Under load the fan runs at full speed. In our test with big load, i.e. computationally and graphically demanding applications, the noise level increased to up to 49.1dB.

The speaker slightly blasts at maximum volume. Otherwise, its sound is good and clear. The basses could be better, but, this is not surprising, because the dv6598eg lacks a subwoofer.
The measured battery runtime ranges from a little above one hour under load to a maximum of about 4 hours with optimized energy settings.
Depending on your demands, a battery runtime of up to 3 hours should be possible in practice.

The HP Pavilion dv6598eg is a classical consumer notebook with generous equipment and accessories. Covered by an attractive case, it could mostly convince in our tests.
The dv6598eg's case does not only look elegant, it is also stable and robust. Furthermore, the ornaments are really beautiful.
The input devices, especially the keyboard, are in general alright. Maybe typing might be a little too loud. Also the touch pad could not totally convince, because its sticky surface makes navigating difficult.
Subjectively, the display is rather average. Unfortunately there was no time left for exact measurements. There are small weaknesses, regarding stability to the vantage point.
The performance is passable, however, the Geforce 8400M GS is slightly too weak for demanding 3D applications or gaming. Still, up-to-date games are possible, but, with reduced details and resolution.
Depending on the chosen performance settings, the emissions range from comfortable silent to really loud. Overall, they are alright, because the dv6598eg stays comfortable quiet in idle mode.
The Pavilion dv6598eg's battery runtime ranges from 1 hour to about 4 hours. So, also a mobile use is possible.

Office Professional. Besides the big 17 inch series HP also offers a new series of compact 15 inch notebooks. One of these is the HP Compaq 6710b. Equipped with Core 2 Duo CPUs and integrated Intel X3100 video cards, the 6710b is a reasonable beginner's notebook of this series. What else you can expect from this notebook, besides its hardware specifications, can be read in detail here.
The new 15 inch business series by HP does not only look alike its bigger competitors by HP, the 17 inch series. It also resembles the 17 inch series regarding quality.
The case, which looks typical HP decent, and business-like, has a good pressure resistance and is very flexural rigid. Although the case is, besides the display cover, mainly made of plastics, the haptics is still alright. While handling the notebook, we could not detect any striking creaking noises or deflections.
Also the display's pressure resistance and flexural rigidity and its hinges are alright. However, the ramshorn hook cannot completely prevent a slight wobbling, if the notebook is closed.
Regarding interfaces, an office base equipment is provided by the 6710b. Besides 4 USB ports at the notebook's sides also VGA and S-Video out are provided at the back side. Especially the USB ports are a little bit too far to the front, and can, so, depending on the attached device, limit the user's area of operation.
Nevertheless, the notebook is equipped with a docking port at its bottom side. So, the Compaq 6710b's interfaces can be enhanced via a docking station. This can also solve problems with cable spaghetti.
The keyboard of the HP Compaq 6710b is attached tightly to the case. Its keys are spacious and the layout is clear. Especially the cursor pad is clearly separated.
Alike other HP notebooks typing faces a clear point of pressure, which makes typing nearly feel jerky. Furthermore, a clear clicking noise can be heard, which, however, does not really disturb.
A new feature of this new business series by HP are hot keys which are sensible to touch provided above the keyboard. The hot keys can be used by a slight touch and usage is visualized by activated LEDs.
The touch pad reacts well and furthermore, its surface's haptics is comfortable. Especially its buttons are very user-friendly, because they have a big, soft lift.
The base version of the HP Compaq 6710b is equipped with a non-reflecting WXGA display with a resolution of 1280x800 Pixel. A BrightView version is also available, but, has a reflecting surface. Furthermore, a WSXGA+ display with a resolution of 1680x1050 is also available.
The measured maximum brightness of the provided displays (1280x800, non glare) was 154.5 cd/m². Despite the brightness diminishes at the upper corners to about 135 cd/m² the illumination is still good at 86%.

Distribution of brightness
The black value of 0.9 cd/m² and the measured maximum brightness of somewhat above 150 cd/m² give a maximum possible contrast of moderate 172:1. Regarding speed of reaction we could not detect any anomalies.
During our outdoor tests the display stayed legible, even if its total brightness is a little bit low in bright environments. Of course the matt surface contributes to the good rating outdoors.
Regarding stability to the vantage point the area of operation is spacious horizontally, and rather narrow vertically, outside it the display darkens or whitens respectively as usually.
The HP Compaq 6710b is designed a beginner's notebook. Although, you can choose between CPUs from T7100s to T7500s, the Intel GMA X3100 rather limits the 3D performance.
The provided equipment is designated for office and Internet applications without high performance demands. In this field this notebook rates good, also because of its low emissions.
If you demand high 3D performance you should rather choose a notebook of the 8510p/w series. Although otherwise identical, these are equipped with an ATI Mobility Radeon X2600 or a NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M or an ATI Mobility FireGL V5600 video chip. With these video cards also CAD and the one or other game should not be a problem.
Furthermore, the 6710b is equipped with 1 GB main memory and a 120GB hard disk with 5400 revs/min. Furthermore, a software bundle with more or less useful applications is also provided.

The sound of the two speakers of the 6710b , located at the front edge, is passable and their maximum volume is alright. The slightly dull sound and the weak basses do not mind, because it's a business notebook.
The sound output via the stereo headphones port is trouble free and provides a good sound.
The 55Wh battery provided a very good runtime in our tests. This is basically because of the moderate equipment of the Compaq 6710b. The minimum runtime of about a little more than 1 hours is clearly exceeded multiple times by the maximum runtime of more than 7 hours. You can assume, that the runtime will be below the maximum in practice, but, nevertheless, it will be usable.

The HP Compaq 6710b was the first representative of the new 15 inch business series we reviewed. Overall, we had a positive impression. We liked the slightly redesigned hot keys and that the successful qualities like robust and stable case persisted.
Also the input devices, i.e. keyboard and touch pad were comfortable and proper for intensive use. Maybe the touch pad is a little bit too low compared to the surrounding case, however, this is also a matter of taste.
The measured parameters of the provided 1280x800 standard WXGA display were passable. However, it could be a little brighter for outdoor usage. The also available WSXGA panel with a resolution of 1680x1050 pixels could be an interesting alternative.
Regarding performance the HP Compaq 6710b is an office notebook with base equipment. In this fields the notebook rates good, also because of its low emissions. Surface temperature and the noise level of the fan stay always alright.
Finally, also another important criterion for office notebooks rates good: The battery runtime of up to 7 hours is remarkable. But, take care, under load the Core 2 Duo processor and the integrated X3100 relatively quickly empty the battery.
Overall, the HP Compaq 6710b notebook reaches a very good result of 88% in our rating. Such a rating is not often reached by office notebooks (especially considering the input devices, emissions, and battery runtime).

The HP Compaq 6510b offers a nice blend of good performance and a reasonable price. The build quality is good, but not great. The look is clean and stylish, but it won't win any awards. The screen quality is good, with no complaints, but it won't outshine some of the nicer Sony, Apple or Fujitsu displays out there. The ports selection is all you really need for a business notebook, and the keyboard is nice to use. The 6510b isn't the lightest or thinnest 14.1" screen notebook out there, but you'd be paying more if it were. In other words, HP has designed a well rounded portable notebook that's not quite on the cutting edge with any of its aspects, but it is reliable and leaves little to complain about -- exactly what you'd want in a budget business notebook.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset (for Merom = Core 2 architecture). It is the successor of GMA 950. Most interesting is the integration of a fully programmable pipeline. Due to the integration of DirectX9 features, HDR and Hardware Transform & Lighning (T&L) - predecessor only had Software T&L - should be ready for Windows Vista Premium (support Aero Glass fully). Respective the data, the peformance should be clearly better than GMA 950.

Topseller? Late, but, finally we got the new 15 inch Inspiron 1520 notebook by Dell for a review. It is the successor of the 6400 series and a beginner's multimedia notebook. A variety of different configurations are available, so, the Dell Inspiron 1520 can even be enhanced to a professional multimedia notebook.
There is no doubt that the Dell Inspiron 1520 is the counterpart of the Inspiron 1720. Considering the outlook only, it is apparently the same notebook, but smaller. It has the same curves and even the same color choice.
Not absolutely, the design of the display cover can be freely chosen. Therewith Dell follows the increasing shift to individual design.
The reviewed notebook had a matte black display cover surface, which felt velvety, nearly rubberized. The coating appeared very robust in contrary to the diverse glossy piano coatings.
The decent silver case has a good flexural rigidity and pressure resistance. Handling the notebook, no creaking noise got evident, besides when pressing the display cover. The size of the gaps above the keyboard could not completely convince. Besides the left gap was bigger than the right one, the size of the gap was generally too big, as its width is more than 1mm.
The two hinges were unable to hold the 15'' inch display without some wobbling. Still, they seemed robust and durable. The display in light clamshell design is securely locked by a ramshorn hook. But, you can detect a clear possible wobbling of the display, if closed.
The rather sparely provided interfaces are distributed at the back side and the back parts of the notebook's flanks. This order is user-friendly as the front side and the areas beside the notebook are free of disturbing cable spaghetti.
We especially missed a video port - a digital video out. The size of the plug was the mostly brought forward argument that a DVI could not be provided, but, this excuse won't hold water any longer since the introduction of the HDMI port.
The keyboard of the Dell Inspiron 1520 appears to be rather compact, still it provides a user-friendly layout by a little bit separated groups of keys. Also the size of the single keys is alright.
Typing feels user-friendly. The keys can be softly pressed, still they have a clear point of pressure. The keyboard unit is completely tightly attached to the case, and even when typing fast the noise does not appear disturbing.
The touch pad is flawless. It has scroll areas for both axis and a comfortable surface. Both of its buttons are user-friendly, because of their big lift.
Besides you can choose the color of the display cover, you can also choose between a variety of different panels. Besides the WXGA version with matt display, the reviewed notebook was equipped with, also a WXGA display with reflecting surface (TruLife), a WXGA+ TruLife panel, and a WSXGA+ display with a resolution of 1680x1050 pixels and TruLife panel are available. The top version costs 98.- Euro more.
Regarding overview, the WXGA+ and WSXGA+ displays are of course interesting versions. Unfortunately, both displays are only available as TruLife version. So, you'll have to live with a reflecting surface in return for a plus of overview.
The good maximum brightness of the built-in 1280x800 display was 231.5 cd/m². Also the average brightness of 199.6 cd/m² is alright. The illumination is 73.6%, which is clearly below-average.

Because of a measured black value 1.0 cd/m², the maximum representable contrast is 232:1, which is average. We did not detect any anomalies regarding speed of reaction.
The matte display and the good brightness of the WXGA panels make an outdoor usage of the Dell Inspiron 1520 even in bright environments possible.
Vertically, the viewing angles of the reviewed display are rather narrow. Outside the area of operation you'll face heavy darkening or whitening of the display. However, horizontally, the viewing angles are alright. At acuter angles you'll face a slight loss of contrast.
The reviewed Dell Inspiron 1520 was a reasonable base version. So, it was only equipped with a Core 2 Duo T5450 processor with 1.66 GHz and a NVIDIA Geforce 8400 M GS.
Combined with 120 GB hard disk and 1GB main memory, it was still a useful notebook, which is able to master office tasks as well as light multimedia applications.
However, a variety of upgrade possibilities are also offered. Besides the already mentioned display version, there are also a lot of alternatives regarding performance relevant parts.
E.g., CPUs up to T7500 (2.2 GHz), main memory up to 4 GB, hard disks up to 250GB or faster 7200 rpm models, but, also a clearly more powerful video card, a Geforce 8600M GT with 256MB DDR2 Ram are offered.
So, it gets quickly obvious that also a playable version of the Dell Inspiron 1520 is available without problems. For good gaming performance you could for example choose a T7300 CPU, 2GB main memory, a WXGA+ panel, a fast 160 GB 7200 rpm hard disks and of course the Geforce 8600M GT.
At the time of writing this version of the Dell Inspiron 1520 would cost about 1300.- Euro. Compared to the recommended price of the base equipment of about 800.-, this is a clear increase, but also the performance should clearly increase...

Loudness
An advantage of the moderate base equipment are surely the low noise and temperature emissions. The notebook was very quiet in idle mode, we measured a noise level of 34.8 dB.
Under load you can hear the 1520 better, but, the maximum of 37.1 dB is still alright, and absolutely not disturbing.
However, the noise of the 120GB hard disk was sometimes disturbing, because it loudly crackled.

Also the surface temperature of the Inspiron 1520 is very low. Maxima of 33.1 °C on the top side or 37.1 °C on the bottom side are alright.

Speakers
The two speakers at the front edge of the notebook provide good and, if demanded, also loud sound. The sound is alright, and also the basses are rather good. When we checked the audio out, we observed a quiet cheeping and cracking noise, which was clearly superimposed by the played back music, but, was always present.
The reviewed Dell Inspiron 1520 was equipped with the optionally available 9 cells battery. Its capacity of 85 Wh combined with the moderate equipment promised a good runtime. This battery upgrade is surely interesting, also because it only costs 35.- Euro. However, the drawback is that the battery protrudes the case.
The measured runtime ranges from a minimum of somewhat above 2.5h to a maximum of above 8 hours with maximum energy saving settings.
Also the runtime with WLAN operation of above 4 hours are a criterion supporting the battery upgrade of the Dell Inspiron 1520.

In summary the Dell Inspiron 1520 is a dignified successor of the successful Inspiron 6400 series. The large number of available configurations, which allow an office version and also a gaming version, make the 1520 especially interesting.
The design of the aluminum case can be adapted to the different configurations and the chassis convinces by robustness and flexural rigidity. Besides some smaller weaknesses, most notably the missing digital video out has to be mentioned. This would be a reasonable supplement especially for a compact 15 inch notebook.
The input devices are fit for office work and games and are liked, because of their reasonable layout and user-friendly typing. Also the touch pad is alright.
The built-in WXGA display has the advantage that it is due to a matte surface and good brightness fit for outdoor usage. However, the resolution of the 1280x800 panels could be higher. Regarding this aspect, Dell also offers a variety of alternatives, but they all have a reflecting surface.
Regarding performance the Dell Inspiron 1520 can be individually adapted to your demands. Possible configurations ranges form averagely equipped office notebooks to playable multimedia notebooks.
The emissions of the reviewed office version were very low. More powerful versions will likely have higher emissions.
Finally, also the battery runtime of the Dell Inspiron 1520 is a clear pro, of course also because of the optional 9-cells battery. A runtime of up to 8 hours leaves nothing to be desired and prepares the ground for mobile use.
